Killed my first buck, and quite a few more with that gun and my own handloads.
When I turned 18, I fell in love and got married.
Best place to start a family, was the Army, so there I went.
I was stationed at Ft Lewis WA, so needless to say, I couldn’t go hunting in Pennsylvania. Not that I didn’t think about it.
I called Dad to see how it went.
“Well,” he said, “I killed a nice 8 point on the mountain the first day.”
“Oh yeah, where at?”
“Over in that hollow below The Big Rock.
My favorite spot. I’d killed my first buck there.
“What was you shooting?”
“That .308 of your’s’
Chit, my gun, my spot.
Christ, Dad, that deer had my name all over it!”
“Well, I’ll send you a couple cans of meat.” “By the way, do you wanna sell that gun?”
I said “No.” Who wants to buy it?”
“Bill M saw it when I was shooting it in. He really liked it.”
“Well, tell Bill it ain’t for sale.”
“That’s good” he said, “That means I can use it till you get home.”
When I got out and back home, I bought a 77 Ruger in .30-06. That 788 was The Old Man’s gun the last 25 years of his life. I cried when I brought it home.
I still shoot it, and I take it hunting now and then, just for the memories.
When I die, it’ll go on to the third generation of Oldhams to use it!
Hopefully my grandchild can use it. It’s a shooter!

Ithaca 37 in 20 gauge. Bought new in 1972 after my Ithaca 37 in 12 gauge was stolen while I was away at college. It has been flawless for 50 years.

My great uncle, my paternal grandfathers brother, told my dad, he would give his shotgun to the first male child to carry on the family name! 😬!

Christmas of 1953, I was 3 years old. Imagine my surprise when "Unk" drug out his 16 gauge L.C. Smith, called me over and handed it to me and told me it was mine!
I was determined to carry it to the car.....but I couldn't keep both ends off the floor at the same time! LOL!
Took lot'sa ducks, squirrels and doves with it.
WAY before my time, somebody had use th r'd old mercury primer smo and the barrels are a bit pitted and it's a tad loose in the breech.....but it'll never leave my possession.
Per the S/N, it was built in 1904....I think?

I grew up shooting a Rem 141 in 30 cal, but my Mom's second husband got away with it, instead of allowing it to stay in the family. I found a beautiful like new 141 30 Rem in a local one man gun shop. Almost bought it, just for the memories. But as it is not what I would consider an actual hunting rifle, it would have been relegated to wall hanger status. And that is not my thing.

I bought one of my two favorite rifles in 1979. A new MIJ Wea Varmintmaster 26 inch in 22-250.
Three years later a used tang safety Ruger 77 in 25-06 was acquired. They are tied for first place in my memories, although a new wife and child necessitated their sale in late '83.

The favoritest still owned is a S&W 657 Mountain Gun purchased from RJM here at the 'Fire. While a Kimber 1911 Target II in 10 mm comes close. Also purchased from Bob.

I still have the one we mail ordered and was delivered to our door by the USPS in 1959. I think we got it from Kline's. It wears a Lyman Alaskan.

My Brno Mod 1 .22, made in 1947. It was originally my old man's, but the Christmas after I turned 11 my parents bought a scope to put on it and gave it to me. It was the second rifle I owned, after an old single shot .22 made by FN. I've won prizes with it, and I've shot rabbits - probably thousands of them - foxes, hares and other critters with it. The beautiful rust blue is a bit thin now, but it will still group 5 rounds of ammunition it likes in about 12mm at 50m. It doesn't have the scope my parents bought - that finally gave up the ghost and was replaced with a 4x Meopta Artemis, and I also fitted an "Ace" trigger shoe 40-odd years ago, but it is otherwise unmodified. It is not the only Brno I have now, but it would be the last I'd let go.

Guess it'd be my Rem11-48 .410 with the recoiling barrel, and a genuine Cutts comp.

I got started hunting and shooting late. Much later than most here. Wasn’t something I grew up with so to speak. So my answer will probably seem sacrilegious, but for me it’s my Bennelli SBE 1. Literally the first gun I ever bought, and likely the wisest choice I have ever made. Bought it after an eye-opening experience with a Texan friend who hosted me for duck hunting among other things I’ve killed everything with that gun that walks flys or crawls. I’ve looked like an ‘ass’ with it in the upland woods, and still out-shot my pals with their Parker’s for Woodcock and grouse. And dropped Buck with it too. Everything in between. Far and away the most versatile, utterly reliable, and uniformly deadly gun that I own. On ANYTHING.

Marlin 60 stamped "Revelation" Western Auto .22cal.
I was 12 when Grandad's eyes got bad and he gave it to me.
I traded it off once, but I got it back. It's a shooter.
