I thought my Beretta Blackwing was light at 5 pounds 15 ounces. I just picked up this English double, a Jackson 20 gauge. It feels like a toy at 5 pounds 4 ounces. What are some of your lightweights?

Gosh, the English know how to make a side by side!
I'm not fortunate to have one, but a few friends do. An English 16 double on the cajun becausse is dang sporty!

Winchester Model 59…12 gauge….6.5 pounds
Ithaca 37….28 gauge…6 pounds

Friend has a couple Charles Daly Lindner SxS 16 Gauge that are the best of the best lightweights. They go around 6 pounds and maybe a little less.

I have handled a couple Rizzini BR's that felt like a toy gun.

Be careful what you wish for. Too light might wear you out if you shoot a lot at one “sitting”, and require some effort to control.

Not sure if the M12 20ga I bought from a pal recently is a Featherweight, but it looks like the one above and is pretty light and handy. It’s my first M12, and now I know why folks like them so much. Very nicely made!

Been kind of a shotgun shakeup in these parts. Besides the M12, I acquired a Browning Gold Hunter 20 last Fall, and in June a Citori 725 Field 12 26”. The O/U is much lighter than my A5 Light Twelve, so I was certain the A5 would never make it afield again. Down the road it went, to another fan.

Right now my lightest is an old 12 ga. WesternField 550 deluxe with a fixed modified vent rib barrel at 6 lbs. 12 oz.. Next lightest is my 20 ga. Browning BPS with 26" barrel at 6 lbs. 15 oz.. I'm a pretty big guy used to hard physical labor and still younger than Methuselah so they don't feel heavy to me.

Had a Beretta AS20EL at 5# 3oz. Lightest shotgun I shoot well is a Franchi 48AL20. 5# 8oz.

My A-5 light 20 & my Benelli 828u are my 2 lightest. Noticeably lighter than my 1100 lt-20. Don’t know exact weights but they both still mount and swing well. My 1100 lt-20 is my go to dove gun though.

I don't own any super-lightweight shotguns.

Lightest is a Superposed Lightning 20 gauge at 6lbs 2oz.
Next lightest is a Model 21 16 gauge at 6lbs 11oz.

Nicest lightweight gun I've handled in a while was a Franchi Instinct SLX 28 gauge. With 28" barrels it was 5lbs 2 or 3oz.

My lightest is a about 6, 4oz if I remember correctly. A Spanish SxS in 16ga.

Other I hunt a lot are just under 7#’s, a Mag 20 A5 and a Simson 12ga SxS.

I have a Beretta 390 I shoot at clays and ducks, it is probably just over 7 but don’t recall weighing it.

6-6 1/2 seems a good spot for an upland gun that gets carried a lot. I don’t know that I’d shoot a fly weight 5 pounder as well?

I can promise you I won’t be shooting any 500 bird skeet marathons with that little Jackson. It will get fed light loads and be a field gun with an occasional round of skeet or sporting clays for fun and practice.

Ithaca 37 20ga Ultra Featherlight.

I think they were 5# even.
Had to kick, DGAS if they were 20 gauges.

My normal 20gauge Featherlight is a fine hunter,
took it shooting clays once.

Once!

I can't shoot truly lightweight guns of any sort very well. They always feel whippy and unbalanced. In shotguns a 6-6.5 lb. 20 gauge with 28" barrel/s is about right. A 7 lb. 12 gauge is good with 26"-28" barrel/s. The barrel length depends upon if the gun is a single barrel repeater or a double gun. Length of the receiver on repeaters affecting balance.

I went the Benelli M2 20 gauge 24” barrel route - it’s well balanced and well under 7lbs.. and I get 4 shots…

I tried the 12 ultralight but it was too light on the front end and didn’t pull up right so I got the 12 & 20 M2’s..

I own a couple sxs 12ga's that come in under 6#. A Bernardelli and a Darne, both all steel and walnut, the Bernardelli really shines out on the prairie where the treks are long and in the thick stuff where one hand is needed to keep brush out of your face.

Then there is the Baby Bretton, 12ga at under 5#, alway thought that might be a great woodcock and grouse gun. I've only seen one and it is not a handsome shotgun.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.
