I see ram is dropping the hemi next year. The new in line 6 cylinder Is supposed quite the engine. I wonder if ford and gm will be coming out with something similar?

Ford did something similar about 15 years or so ago.

Interesting. I wonder if they will put this in the 2500 trucks?

The last inline 6 I remember from Ford was the old 300 6, but that's been a lot longer than 15 years ago.

It would be no thing to make a new-design 5L (300ci) +/- twin turbo six that makes 450hp and 650tq. The standard 3.5 Ecoboost from Ford is already at 400/500, and that's not even the high output version from the Raptor. Those are 7.3 Powerstroke numbers from the early 2000's.

I would buy that and may consider the Dodge if they put it in their 2500 series.

I was referring to the eco boost twin turbo 6.

That new dodge is running a lot of boost. Up to 26 psi in a little gasser that complete barely weighs over 400 pounds😳

Be cool to see a bigger cube I6 unit for the 2500/3500 series. 6ish liters and sequential turbos.

They did and used millions of guinea pigs to test it . The Ram design is an inline V6, should be interesting if it is done right.

inline 6; not V6. Those are different, though, I've even seen that mistake in automotive write ups on vehicles. The other one of those is when you see craigslist ads with GM 10-bolt "third member," when a third member it aint.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ram brought back the Slant 6.

Torque is the only thing similar, 525 ft-lbs torque in the 03 7.3L. My 99 is around 450 ft-lbs, and it does it at 1600 rpm. Peak 235 HP is also achieved at 2800 rpm. The Eco-Boost doesnt achieve peak torque until 2800 rpm and peak HP is around 5K rpm.

As good as those Eco-Boost numbers are it'll work harder and never pull as well as an old 7.3L even from the early 90s. Not to mention the limitations on towing you have with a 1/2 ton truck.Y'all can keep your turboed 6 cylinder gassers, I'll keep plugging along in my old diesel getting 19 mpg empty and 11-12 towing a 10K lb trailer.

Fair points. I wouldn't try to make a 1/2 ton into a 3/4 ton, but having 450-500lbs of torque at 2,000 to 3,000rpm is nice in a 1/2 ton. When you are towing or working it a bit, power does feel more like a early-gen turbo diesel than a small-displacement V8 that you used to find in nearly every typical half ton. You don't have to wind it out to make it work, which is nice.

All I know is my buddy is very happy with his Eco-Boost with 6 speed transmission, but does state he only gets 7 mpg towing his camper or tritoon boat. He does live on the western slope of CO. I don't know what his boat weighs, but the camper is less than 4K lbs.

Last 1/2 ton I owned was a 1990 Chevy Silverado with 5.7L. It pulled decently well with a loaded 16' stock trailer and 18' car hauler, just about 10 mpg. I just had to keep out of overdrive, as the weak link was the 4L60E transmission. Anyway it was a good pickup, put two transmissions in it and one engine but I ran it to almost 400K in 15 years of ownership.
