Found this last night down by the old cow lot. I can’t remember what they were used for. But they slipped into something and performed like a hook. I thought they were used on old wagon. 30-30 ctg for scale.

It was driven into a log and hooked to a rope so horses could pull it.

Thanks you. I knew it was used for something like that. Makes perfect sense! Going in my tool box. I have use for it.

I believe that is one type of a harrow tooth, but I could be wrong.
There are a few out at the place.

Mark, I think you are right. I remember a horse drawn harrow with teeth like that.

If it was a log hook, it's never been used. It would be flattened on top from hammering it in the log.

Old horse logging "hooks" are not hooks.. "L" shaped with an eye on the long leg, and a sharpened short leg. With lots of hammer tracks at the juncture of the "L" legs.

My first thought was maybe a homemade latch pin like used to secure a door, gate, wagon tailgate, etc.

The inside profile of that hook would cut through a rope, unless said rope was attached by means of a metal ring.

Im leaning toward a harrow tooth. The only place this had been hammered on or a bit flattened is on the short end of the hook.

Drilling a pilot hole in a log would require less pounding to seat the long end and it would require a chain or a ring and rope for dragging.

There's no flat spot for hammering. That would bugger the sharp edge in a hurry.
I've seen lots of old harrow teeth but I don't remember any with a hook. Usually they look like a spike. I did find this photo of a meat hook, supposedly made to pound in a ceiling to hang meat. I don't know how it could hold much, though, without any mean of fastening it. I would question whether that's correct.

I swear I've seen them on a harrow like was said above. It had a long handle that changed the angle of the teeth.

It’s a spike harrow tooth. I found the exact one by searching “spike harrow, j spike”.

My guess is harrow tooth as well. Long end is worn or ground into a sort of knife edge. Just my BWAG

Look at the top left corner of this harrow. That looks like one being used to control depth.

Ok, I'll go with the harrow tooth. The photo I posted of a supposed meat hook was wrong.
