Of course you talking about gobblers in your neck of the woods and not painting the country with a wide brush. Eh?

Gobblers in the big oak woods....would be the turkeys that will feed heavily on acorns.
The December craw on a young gobbler can hold a soft ball sized pile of acorns.
There's an old saying you are what you eat for a reason....
People in the South used to eat Opossum some condsidered it a delicacy....possum conisours caught them alive put them up and feed then a while before they butchered and ate them.
I saw seven possums run out of a dead cows azz one time.

You said: A gobbler is in his prime in the spring.. In some of the colder regions after a hard winter of snow and cold many gobblers are not in their prime.

A gobbler is in his prime for spring mating season.

A gobbler is in his prime for spring mating season. That depends. We've had years where there was still 3 feet of snow on the ground in mid April. I've seen plenty of turks {and deer} dying and/or dead from starvation in April when they would have been breeding in a milder year.
