Picked this one up yesterday. Was kind of funny because as I was holding it waiting to buy it, I got a message from a friend telling me about this nice model 1919 that was for sale. grin

First year according to serial number. Now I just have to find an appropriate sling for it. Redfield base and a Weaver J2.5 scope.

If you were looking for a 1919 then good for you. Even if you were not, god for you. laugh

That's a sweet looking setup. I'd love to put some rounds through it.

My 1919 has a 7XXX serial, and all of the early features. It came with a Knor No Buckle sling. My 1923 and -33 both have leather slings. What are you looking for? I have been following several 1919's for other stuff and I think they all have leather slings. If I get one, I'll let you know.

Mine is serial 74xx, so will be similar to yours. I need to check my piles of “stuff”, seem to remember buying a sling once upon a time. If I don’t, I’ll ping you. They didn’t come with a sling, and I don’t think Savage was selling a sling at that time. So just want something that looks period and fits.

I already had one, but somebody had mucked with the pistol grip. Gave one of my sons another, and have a later 19 (or two grin).

I seem to have an assortment of them. The hard part is having magazines that function correctly.

Seems odd they'd produce a rifle sling ready without the sling.
Mine has a leather sling of some sort on it. Hafta look closer for markings sometime.

Did Savage supply slings on any other rifles? Military? RS?

The early guns seem to be very magazine specific, I have one magazine that works well in my early 1919 and most other magazines cause problems, they sit to low.

Attached is the magazine adjustment instructions for these, it says to file the rear rib down until they fit - I've found with mine that the ribs are too short on most later magazines to start with. To use those I would have to shorten the bottom of the slot in the rear magazine catch or add to the bottom of the rib on the magazine.

Also attached are pictures of three versions of the 5 shot magazine and the last picture shows a 7 shot that was modified for use in the bolt actions. The original design for the 7 shot had a sharp 90° corner on the rear of the follower to hold the action open after the last shot, for some reason this was eliminated for the bolt actions although some early magazines will still do this. The idea was to let the shooter know the magazine was empty and to stop dry firing.

Oops.. have to correct myself. At the end of the 20's they listed a Kerr adjustable sling in the Component Parts catalog, but not earlier in catalogs or component parts list. I did however just find on the 1923'ish pricelist that it lists a Kerr adjustable sling. So they might have been selling that sling as early as 1919, but it would have been an accessory.

Here's the catalogued picture.

PS: They also listed a more standard hunting style strap with sling hooks for model 99's and 1920's.

Those Model 19 swivels use to be an ease fine as no one wanted them. You might watch for them in the junk boxes at gun shows if you are going to get into Savage .22's.

Kerr slings...not so cheap.

Yes, those cheaply made swivels seem to pop up everywhere - until the moment you need one. My Stevens 417 Walnut Hill was missing the swivel on the barrel band (it uses the same swivel loop that Savage .22's did) and I couldn't find one for love nor money for the longest time.

There's a Walnut Hill at the local Cabela's.. but at $2000'ish it stayed there.
