If there's something that I can get at Southern States, that's where I go. It's right around the corner.

A couple of miles away, we have a HD and Lowes across the street from each other. I typically go to HD to see the freak show. They've got this older guy working a cash register, maybe 70 years old, with long gray hair, makeup & lipstick, and a set of boobs. It has to be one of the weirdest dudes I've ever seen. Some day I'll take a picture of him.

Years ago, when I was trying to decide between building or buying a home, I noticed that Menards offered kit homes. Somewhat like Sears did a century ago; they ship different components on a schedule. The price was very competitive with buying a home. I called one of the contractors listed and talked with him for some length. He said to forgot the price Menards listed, as most of the lumber they supply has to be pitched and replaced by him as it is not suitable for construction.

I alternate between Lowes and HD depending on what I need. Dimensional hardwood from Lowes due to the wide selection; studs and plywood from HD as, here at least, they are a bit cheaper.

It really is not that daunting to go through a pile of lumber to pick out the good pieces.

Nope it’s not daunting, neither is the subtle ‘gotcha’

If youre building a doghouse once every 25 years

If youre building a deck, framing a garage, finishing a basement, a shed, a shop, etc. and youre doing two, 3 good sized jobs a month. It gets aggravating

The added factor of pulling 200-300 pieces of lumber and waiting in line behind 5-6 Karen and Kyles buying rose bushes and keying in a refrigerator extended warrant…. Yeah alla that

I mainly go to Lowe’s if I need anything. I sold lumber while in college, so I know what a straight board looks like! 😂 The Home Depot here is so crowded with [bleep] you can’t get down the aisles and SPS seems to never have what I need or want, but they can order it and I’ll get it a month after I need it.

With that being said, I have come to avoid Lowe’s after 6 pm as they never seem to have cashiers and only self checkout is open. Since I don’t work there, I’m not checking myself out if I can help it.

I certainly understand that, with the volume of material that you go through, that it would be a PITA.Most folks though, I believe, don't use nearly that much. Were I in your shoes I too, would rely strictly on a trusted lumberyard.

I have done a fair amount of basement finishing, deck builds, etc. My situation is different from yours. Because I am an old phart I only pick up what my SUV holds which is enough to keep me busy for a couple days. Then my old body needs to rest on the third, then go back to sort more lumber for the next stage. It works well for me.

I didn't sell lumber when I went to college, or high school.

What I want to know is when did the grading change? For a few years I didn't do much carpenter type stuff.

I used to know the difference between contractor/construction grade, #2 or better, #1, and Select. Now it seems even # 2 or better has defects that would have had it tossed in the discount bin back when I was younger.

Now, as 79s says, next time I go to Lowe's/HD I'm gonna hitch up my britches and give them youngsters a piece of my mind about the quality of a simple forest product.

Bring the caulking gun up with you while doing the roof. Hit every last one of them sunsabishes before you come down.

You'll still have to go back up there again someday.

Or better yet...........................................................hire some young fool to do it for you.

I'm no longer a fan of roofs, other than to have one over my head on nights like last night. We actually had RAIN. 0.68" at the airport for the 24 hours yesterday. And some more this morning. I still don't think we're going to hit our average of 12"+/- for the water year though. We're still almost 4" behind and only 10 more days to go and we're not in the Eastern US or on the coast.

I don't do Lowes. Prices are much higher than Home D.

But they did have nice potted tomato plants 18 inches tall this past spring for $24.99.

MG Builders, I go in tell them what I want Pay for it then drive the truck and trailer around into the yard, their guys loaded it, and they let me look at it first if I say no they get another piece. They are much cheaper than Lowes or HD and have better service.

Lordy, I don't miss that [bleep] (WA). And you're right. Thanks for the memories. Glad I landed where I did.

Builder's discount is the closest to me they have reasonable prices ,you can drive in and they load everything for you . If I need just one or two pieces I have a friend with a band mill just down the road.

Went to HD today. I needed string for my trimmer mower. I FU'ed em all the way in , got my stuff and paid them.

I would have goats, but Boone (the catahoula) likes to eat them.

Home Depot as a last resort.
Lowe's is ok on some fixtures and such.
Ridout Lumber is where I go for my lumber, windows, doors and shingle needs.
Every once in a while I will go to Barton's if it's closer and I'm in a hurry
