I was in Portland on business over the summer, went to Avis to pick up my rental and their entire inventory of 20 plus cars had their catalytic converters stolen overnight, in a fenced yard. They did manage to find me a car but only because it was returned after the theft had occurred.

I’d like to buy the guy who kicked the jack handle a couple of beers.

SOOOooooo!
They 'believe' he may have been trying to steal it.....
BUT, they don't think anything criminal happened!?!?!?!?!?!?

This thread just gave me a frightening thought. One of those converter thieves could get right under my Toyota Tacoma and cut off the converter without having to jack the truck up. Which is exactly why I have a full set of skid plates on my 4Runner. I thought about hassle and inconvenience of having to replace a cat, especially on a cross country trip. I figure the $1,000 for the skids was insurance that the my cat stays my cat. Fuggers can still get it, but it's gonna take a while cutting 1/4" plate. Won't be a 15 second job.
