Finally got to go out squirrel hunting yesterday. I sat and sat. Didn't see anything. Too windy for squirrels. I was about to pack it in when the wind blew again and I heard a dull thud. Hmmm... what was that? A paw paw! I'm gonna get something for my effort! So I went around shaking a few trees. Came up with a nice take.

They taste like a cross between a mango and a banana with a texture about like yogurt when they are as ripe as I like them.

I'm trying to find a variety that can take occasional winters down in the negative 20 range, and regularly 0 to -5 or so.
Won't matter to me if it dies back some, as long as it can come back in a couple of years.

You'll probably have to get a named cultivar or just plant some local wild seeds. Here's a cultivar guide - https://cultivar.guide/pawpaw

Thanks there are no wild ones around to get seeds from. I just figured to put a tree or two in the orchard I'm starting. Looking at that list, it doesn't appear any are hardy enough for this area. Thanks though

We used to sing a song when I was a kid, it went kind of like this…
"Way down yonder in tha paw paw patch, That’s where granddaddy got his very first snatch"
We thought surely it was destined for a #1 hit.

No Paw Paws but I did take a little walk this evening. Saw about a dozen Grey squirrels over on one hill that has huge oaks mixed in with Hickory trees.
Pard and I planning to get after em Sunday AM.
I have only ever ran on to 1 paw paw tree. Wouldn't mind planting a couple.
The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!
