I’ve come to realize a good chainsaw is a real asset..... I’m 49 now and still have and use a home lite super xl with a 20” bar that my daddy bought new when I was probably 7 or 8 years old...... it’s still a hum dinger....... I know Stihl, echo and husqvarna are all great saws but this ole home lite sure has been a good one

I've always bought Poulan. Thought they were the cat's meow! Youngest kid bought a Husqvarna in '21 to cut firewood for the "Big Freeze". It hadn't run in over a year. I picked it I yesterday. Plenty gas, plenty bar oil. Prime, choke, pull rope! Fired and ran on the third pull!

Don't just break it down by brands. Each brand has different lines. Decide your needs and one appropriate size from the proper line to fit your needs. Local parts and dealer support is also quite important. That is why dolmar was never very popular in my area because they didn't have but very little dealer support or parts locally in my locally I mean within 50 miles or more ..

I run a battery operated craftsman, it’s righteous. I heat solely with wood and cut an average of 12 full cord a year. That's gasser work, but for stuff around the yard, small take downs, trimming, etc. and cutting campfire wood my little 20V Craftsman is the bomb.

I have came to the conclusion that most any chainsaw(gas) is only as good as the operator that maintains it. Most chainsaws that run like schitt are owned by folks that their lawnmowers and other equipment have many of the same issues… YMMV

Dolmar is done. That includes the blue Makita ones.
OP, We were about the yellow saws. Still have 3 10-10s, 2 run, the other would with some effort. One is used as a pinch saw, or if I want to make noise. Loudest saw I've ever heard, 10-10s are distinctive. Best saw ever for decibels.
Nothing wrong with that Super XL. Very good saw in its day. Still good if it works well.
Do not however, let someone hand you a Husky 555 or 565. You will stall it out. It won't have the torque of your saw. But once you let it do it's thing? You don't like Old Blue quite as much. Speed, quiet, smooth. Not just Husky, a Dolmar(if you find one, it's gonna be an orphan) or that other German brand. All good stuff.

Fixing to sell my Stihls and go with Echo, I think. Due to local dealer with factory trained mechanic and their own shop with factory parts.
My Stihls have been good, but I have spent as much on that 193 t in the last few years as it would have cost to simply replace it. Replacement parts for Stihl around here seem to be generic, and they do not last, seems to me.
Really contemplating keeping the Echo for the five year warranty period and then sell them and get new ones. I heat multiple structures with wood I cut, and I do not have time for saws that don’t work when I need to use them.

There is a youtube saw guy "Dyno Joe Mods", who takes new stock saws and tunes them to his altitude, and then runs them on his dyno, and then shares the graph and printouts with you. I think the guy is the real deal. After a few years working for my son logging, I was of the opinion that the top brands were pretty evenly matched, and said so here on the fire on the weekly chainsaw threads. I was wrong. The dyno tells the real story, there are some shocking differences between brands. As one example, in the small saw category, 50cc ish, the top 2 brands of like 8 brands tested had a 12% difference in power. Who knew?
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Husky makes a cheap one, a farm/ranch one, and a pro at 50cc. Stihl, same. Gotta be real careful with those tests, be sure you have Chevy vs Ford Cadillac vs Lincoln Ferrari vs Lamborghini Or, you can be like most. Pick the color you want to win and use their Pro saw vs the El Cheapo from whoever you want to lose. Stihl tends to orientate their Pro saws to a bit more torque, less speed. Husky goes more for speed. Dolmar, built top performance saws. Good saws, but their top end saws were better off in hands that understood how to use them. Guys who didn't treat them good had problems.

I know Stihl, echo and husqvarna are all great saws but this ole home lite sure has been a good one Dad bought a home lite 240 "18 bar about 1990. Chain fell off & chimney needed repair so he dumped the gas & oil out and put it in the shed. Fast forward 24 years and he gave it to me to fix or junk. Put the chain on, gassed it up with 32:1, and it ran like a sewing machine. Just gave it away recently and got a Stihl. Old home lite didn't have enough power for the 18" bar.

At Sheetz gas stations here in PA the end set of pumps has alcohol free gas. That and keeping a sharp chain does more for cutting than any brand.

An under powered saw just sucks all day long. Get one with enough power for the job, then buy the next 2 sizes larger.

I have came to the conclusion that most any chainsaw(gas) is only as good as the operator that maintains it. Most chainsaws that run like schitt are owned by folks that their lawnmowers and other equipment have many of the same issues… YMMV Agree! I have 7 (or 8?) chainsaws various brands, and if I keep them maintained they work well. But I tend to favor certain ones for quite a while. And the older I get I favor the smaller ones. I have a small Homelite XL2 that is a sweet limbing saw, but has gotten to the point where it stalls if turned to cut horizontally. Prolly air leak into the case.

Runs like a top horizontal, dies when you turn it vertical. On a top handle arborist saw. And nobody here has been able to fix it to where it lasts more than a couple weeks.

Get a Stihl or Husqvarna and go forth and slay some wood. Time has demonstrated that these 2 are consistently on top of the hill.

Watch Guilty of Treeson youtube videos...those guys can teach a lot.
Whichever saw you buy, learn to use a file to sharpen the blades, not some hack gadget that takes 20 minutes to setup and 5 seconds to wreck your blades.
