45 colts are fun. Sold my NM BH a few years ago and regret it. It was a 5 1/2 bbl gun and I meant to replace it with a 4 5/8 model. Haven’t yet.

Buffalo Bores heavy load was a hoot. 325 wfn at something near 1300fps if I recall. Never put that bullet in an animal but it would go clean through some awfully large maple logs. Lol.

Count me as another fan of the plow handle. Very comfortable for heavy loads.

Mackay, if you are going to carry an Elmer Keith revolver in Elmer Keith country, I think the 1AT should be mandatory. Love your style!

p.s. It also works well in rural central Ohio.

You need to sprinkle some water on your handguns to complete the pic…..😁

I sprinkled my whole body with water!

Ends up those mossy rocks were a whole lot slipperier than anticipated and I went for a dunk!

Fortunately it was hot out so everything was drying pretty quickly.

In fact I had set up a little silnylon tarp to get some shade while the kids and dog played in the river and I sat in the shade.

Here is Henry the Happy Hound drooling waiting for me to toss him some of my cheese and crackers!

Mackay, what was the red dot sight in your early picture? Will it hold up to 270gr, 900fps loads?

Thanks.

This isn the sight I'm asking about. Also, what is the mounting system?

Thanks.

They will literally stack 5 shot one ragged hole 25 yard groups with proper ammo.

In this case, this is what is called .45 cowboy special which is a .45 Colt cut to .45 ACP length.

You can shoot those for light weight, low recoil loads, or heavier "elk/moose" type loads, all just by swapping ammo.

Here is a .45 Cowboy Special, .45 Schofield, and .45 Colt aka Lng Colt:

Frank,

That is a Burris Fastfire.

Yes it will handle the 270 grain, 900 FPS loads fine, as I have been using it for T&E purposes for a while now, and have had zero issues.

That said, if I was looking to purchase one today, I would opt for a Holosun or Trijicon RMR, both of which have good track record on guns that see a lot of use.

The mount is a Weigand Weigatinny mount.

It replaces the rear sight. I use them on both Rugers and Smith handguns and have had zero issues using them on either gun.

There is no such thing as the "45 Long Colt". It is the 45 Colt PERIOD.

Same people who call magazines clips and cartridges bullets or ask "what caliber is it" rather than "what chambering"

My rant for today !

I will always call it the .45 Long Colt or .45 LC.

Probably the best round for field revolvers in 5 or 6 shot versions.

John Linebaugh carries a 45 Colt as his everyday revolver, and thinks it's superior to the 44 Mag in every way.

And, he knows a thing or two about big bore revolvers.

Here's some pic's of leather and some then my naked 45 Long Colts. A model 92 take down gussied up by Turnbull, a 73 Beretta Renegade, a SAA from Nutmeg, an old style Vaquero with power custom innards, and my model 25-15 (it was in an N frame pic earlier. The leather without a holster is my wife's...basically unused. There's a 44mag oldstyle vaquero and 38-40 SAA in leather just so you can see how a revolver sits in them.

If you were going to be carrying where there was a pretty good chance of running into a grizzly. Would you carry the double action or single action and why?

Limit to .45 colt only, No option of carrying a shotgun or rifle and don’t have any other calibers.

Double action.

No question about it.

I have participated in numerous "bear drills" over the years at an industry friends place. The short version is that single action shooters fail miserably over and over. They just cannot get repeated hits in a very small time frame consistently.

The drill is a 3 shot drill.

You have 3 targets and it must be done in 3.5 seconds.

You start by shooting the farthest target first, then the middle target, then the closest, which is a clay pigeon or a tile which is on the bear targets nose.

The hits must be in the center of the target. These are Alaska State Parks bear targets.

Guys using maxed out 454s, 500 S&Ws, etc fail every single time. I have seen a lot of those guys who are lucky to get a second shot anywhere on the paper, let alone actually in the kill zone. 90+% never fire a third shot. Many of them anticipate the recoil of their hand cannons so much that I have seen rounds go in the dirt in front of the targets.

The guys who can complete the drill consistently are shooting .45 Colts and .44 Mags with mid range loads. 240/250 to 270 grain loads in the 1000 to 1100 FPS range.

Even then it takes experience and practice to shoot quickly and accurately controlling the recoil and getting your hits in 3.5 seconds when shooting magnum loads.

In the dozens upon dozens of times I have participated in the drill and observed(probably over 75 times now) the drill, I have seen it successfully completed exactly 1 time by a guy using a single action. He is a good shooter and did a fine job, but the fact is that in spite of all the keyboard theorists out there, SA revolvers are a serious handicap in real life.
