Just got a text and some pictures from my sister who lives in a little town on the coast due west from Cocoa Beach and Merritt Island, a few miles southwest from Cape Canaveral. The tracking map shows the eye passed just a few miles north of them but they are okay.

She sent some before and after pictures of a little creek that runs right behind their house, as in 10-12 feet from their back fence. It's swollen to twice its normal size but no flooding since the banks are pretty steep already.

Cape Canaveral's location was picked in some measure since it historically receives the fewest hurricanes so we joked about her moving north last year from Boca Raton to where she is now to escape the storms but their first season in the new location one found her anyway.

Sanibel Causeway wiped out
Sanibel and Captiva cut off from mainland

The causeway is the only way for vehicles to enter or leave the islands.

A section of the causeway leading to Sanibel is gone, wiped out.

Alarm bleats endlessly at the tollbooth for the Sanibel Causeway. Step just beyond it, and the road soon gives way. Where the bridge rises from the mainland toward the island, one of the first sections of the span has disappeared. Crumbled pavement lies near the water’s edge. The rest of the bridge stretches forward, unreachable.

JUST BEFORE THE SANIBEL CAUSEWAY — Under the toll plaza sign — 1/2 a mile out — McGregor Road to Sanibel Island is impassable.

The pavement is folded up like an accordion, ripped to ribbons by a powerful storm surge. Nearby, a spiral staircase was deposited in the brush next to a white pickup.

The US Coast Guard has already performed 28 rescues since they went out in the early hours of the morning today, looking for people who may be in distress.

That’s one way to make sure your house is completely replaced instead of months of arguing with the insurance company about what is flood damage and what is wind damage. What will be fixed by insurance. Now that house is a straight fire claim and it burned to the slab. I’m sure the insurance company will still argue and delay.

From the pics it looks like most of the houses are intact. At least that is a plus.

Don't know how much surge they had, but for us, Katrina, Ida the flood waters don't recede, they have to be pumped out. We are surrounded by levees and are like a bowl. Fortunately, I have not had to endure any damage where I live, despite being inside the bowl.

Having to wait several days to weeks to get back to your house so you can start to gut it is very painful. Mold starts quickly.

Best wishes to those who will have to rebuild.

Most here reading this have no idea of the trouble homeowners insurance is here in Florida and how expensive it can be. Or how insurance companies use flood insurance vs windstorm insurance arguments to delay or not pay for damage.

I could see them using the same argument to blame the fire on the storm to get out of paying.

I suspect more than few insurance companies will go bankrupt due to the damages this storm leaves behind.
