We're in the market for a gas wood splitter and I'm wondering what brand(s) any one here would recommend for around $1500. We have pine and fir mostly, a little larch, we're considering the Boss 27 ton from Costco. I've also read favorable reviews of the Champion brand. Thanks!

Why would you need a wood splitter for pine and fir.Wait until it freezes and that schit pops like a sore pimple one stroke.

I had a even a cheapo Huskee from Tractor Supply Co. it was only an 18-20 Ton

It would blast hickory, gnarly twisted white oak, sweet gum and locust with ease

I think mine is a 27 ton MTD.... had to replace the motor last year with a Honda I ordered from northern tool. I split all oak and almond... pretty hard wood. If all I had to split was strait pine or other soft woods I would get an electric model if I had access to electric.... so much quieter. Jmo.

We have a Northern Hydralic's,, what ever splitter you buy as soon as the engine starts to be cranky replace it with a Honda motor. It'll outlast you, mine starts at 20 below, although I don't need to as we put up our wood in April.

I bought the el-cheapo 20ton from TSC 10+ years ago and it still runs perfectly. Splits oak, hickory, maple, ash etc... I like it especially since It splits in both directions. Has a Honda motor.

You don't need the biggest and baddest wood splitter made that's for sure. It's unbelievable the power that can be made using hydraulics.

Get something with lift assist or that you can add it to or the splitter’s going to make your back worse. Even stand up models require a fair bit of fitness if you’re splitting bigger wood.

25 ton Countyline from TSC. Bought 4 years ago on sale for $900. 6.5hpKohler engine. Does a great job on big maple and oak. Change engine oil occasionally and have changed the hydraulic oil filter once.

I run strong saws and sharp chain.

I cut logs into "Frisbees" and throw them in my dump truck.

I dump the load where I need it... and cover with plastic if need be.

Wood dries very fast this way...

Most species check... and many "split themselves" while handling.

"Frisbees" thickness is determined by weight and my ability to handle easily.

32" log... maybe 2"

24" log... maybe 3-4"

12" log maybe 10"-12"

6" branch... whatever the woodstove will fit.

In Virginia, I have not used wood for primary heat for many years.

Once the WV cabins are up... wood will be the ONLY HVAC.

I hate handling wood more then twice... I will never split again.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

I have a Speeco 22 ton and it is just fine. My brother my dad and me went with a Sears about 15 yrs ago and that is fien too. The 22 ton vs 27 ton was not noticable . The biggest thing to pay attention to is the cycle speed , and the engine. I have a Briggs start on fire on me last year. it was a small motor but was fine . I bought another Briggs and it is fine too. However , a Honda engine is the best. i would have bought a Honda for a replacement but they were out about 1 year . I would much rather have a Honda .

Have a 27 ton Swisher, it is a beast and has been used to cut 15-20 cord a year for the last 3 years. Bought it from an old diary farmer who was getting too old for $500. Starts first or second pull every time.
