My girl , Pups and myself went to our Property up in Arizona for a 3 week get away several years ago.
We locked up the house tight even boarded up the doggy door so thieves could not crawl threw it.

When we got home we found 5 dead Rats laying all over the house.
a week or so went by and we kept smelling death.
We traced it to under our bed an old water bed frame and I found what was left of a 6th rat melted into the carpet even the maggots were gone.

We found out when we got home that our dogs were not such god varmint hunters in the house but everything they could catch out side would be dead Being Jack Russel's you would think that nothing would be crawling around inside the house.

It makes me wonder if it will happen again when we all leave again

Several years ago my uncle and my aunt went away for the weekend and when they came back one of their pet turtles had given up the ghost while they were away. My uncle told me when he walked into the house the smell about knocked him out.

This is gonna take me a minute.

Week away for uncle and aunt;

They just went away for a jaunt;

Caught scent of Aunt Myrtle;

Turned out, was a turtle;

The farm, the turtle had bought.

Commyfornia is full of all kinds of Rats not just 4 legged ones.

I gots a few like that in the woodshed that was here when we bought the place.

I should get back up on that thing and seal a few more, noticed a few drips starting up again.

Then again, it's just a woodshed.
