In the market for one of these two rifles. The sensible thing to do would be handle them both then make a decision.....however...no where around my area has them. Maybe y'all can help me spend some money.
I mostly shoot off the bench at the local range punching paper and some steel. I dont do much squirrel hunting anymore so I guess the primary use of the gun would be a 98% range toy. Plus I have other rimfires I could beat through the brush. So that leads me to the 1710HB.....but then I have this idea that it would be nice to take the 1712 for a stroll through the autumn squirrel woods. Also worth noting. I think the 1712 with its roll over comb and schnabel for-end look exactly how a nice 22 rifle should look. I guess my biggest fear is that the 1712 os gonna look silly with a 6-24x on top of it and that the 1710 might be too much of a "club"?
Can anyone help me spend some money on these two very different Annies? What a problem to have, right?

Buy one and start saving for the other one. ...Just kidding. Too much glass just takes time to get used to. If it shoots you'll grow to love it.

They're not that different. A 1712 comes with a 2-stage trigger, 1710s have a single stage trigger. However, you can order them as you like. Ie., a 2 stage on the 1710 and a single stage on the 1712.
For a range toy I'd get the 1710HB. There is no difference in average expected accuracy between any of the models you listed, but the HB might be a little steadier off bags.
I have a 1712 and, though superbly accurate, it is hardly my idea of a field rifle. My 1978 Sav/Ans 164 is alot lighter and handier in the field.
IMO, silly is as silly does. None of the models you mention look silly with a large variable on top. I have a 6-20 VX3 on the 1712 and a couple 30mm SWFAs on my field guns. Thinking about switching to a 34mm Arken on one of those field guns.

Having owned and shot 1710's and 1712's in smallbore silhouette my thoughts are that the rollover cheekpiece gives good support for off-hand, as far as looks it is a personal like or dislike. But for shooting off bags the sporter stocks SUCK - they very thin at the bottom and are difficult to get a stable positon with on bags, sort of like trying to balance a knife on its cutting edge. If you plan on bench style shooting get one of the models with a wider and flatter forearm.
If you do end up with a sporter when shooting from bags put the bag (rest) as close to the magazine as possible since this is the widest and most stable place on the forearm.
I am in agreement with avoiding the HB if you intend to use it as a carrying or hunting rifle, they are ill balanced. I had one and it went down the road quickly.

Thanks for the comments gentleman. As much as I love the look of the 1712, I decided the 1710HB was better suited for what I'll be doing. Just ordered it at the LGS this am.

Picked up the rifle yesterday. Spent the morning getting all the factory grease out of the gun. Mounted a 6.5-20 EFR that I scored in the classifieds here and had a buddy help get the trigger down to a tolerable level. Looking forward to shooting it if the wind ever decides to lay down. post picture

Great choice. The 1710HB is a bit too heavy for me to carry around in the woods, but it's makes a great rifle for informal benchrest shooting.

Whatever you said...everyone knows you are a lying jerk. That's a bold assertion. Point out where you think I lied. Well?

It is Fascinatingly HILARIOUS,how crossed-eyes and pointy heads, perpetually lick windows on the outside...while looking in. Hint.
Fortunately,Imagination and Pretend are free,so even they can "afford" to "contribute". Hint.
Fhuqking LAUGHING!.......

Can anyone help me spend some money on these two very different Annies? What a problem to have, right? I literally just went through the exact same situation last year only I had to have a sporter weight barrel in either version. There’s no way to say this without sounding spoiled and for that I apologize but I knew I wanted a 1710 or 1712 sporter for local squirrel match and nobody within 4 hour drive had both so I just ordered 1 of each. Got them here and adjusted triggers and mounted scopes and headed to the range. Here’s my 2 cents… I’m only 5’7 so the 1712 with 2” shorter barrel really fit me nice I also liked the 2 stage trigger once I got used to it (definitely have to get used to it) really have zero complaints on the 1712! Now onto the 1710, I like the single stage trigger because that’s what I’m used to! The 2” longer barrel really doesn’t bother me a bit on the bench. I can shoot the 1710 better than I could shoot the 1712. Not saying someone else couldn’t pick up the 1712 and whip me but as for me shooting them the 1710 just works for me so it’s my go to!!! Now as far as heavy barrel goes… if you decide you want a heavy barrel why in the world would you buy a 1710 when there are good ol classics like the 54 match every where??? Don’t be scared of a old 54 match I’ve had a bunch and let me tell you, the ones that look plum wore out and been drug behind a truck… well there’s a reason they have a lot of wear on them… they are the shooters!!! Good luck with whatever you decide cheers

Stick, I know you like modifying things, but doing that to an Annie is a criminal act. Wintertime boredom?
