I have a kickass McWhorter custom 7-08 that' shoots waaaay better than I can with various loads and bullets. The older I get though, the more I'm loving shooting suppressed, not ashamed to admit it. It currently has a 24" Hart barrel, and wondering if chopping it to 20" or so would be a stupid idea as mentioned, it shoots so good as is. I have a suppressor for it already but haven't used it.

Cut it. It isn’t going to get less accurate or less handy for sure JG.

I can’t think of anything you’d dislike about it minus maybe 100FPS LOSS.

Thanks, kind of what I was thinking but never had one done. I'm not too worried about velocity loss. I could probably ramp up my 140 AB loads at least another 50fps if I wanted to. They currently run 2820 at the muzzle.

If you like the suppressor, it sounds like you love the rifle, I can't see anything bad coming from it, other than you pick that McW a bunch more.

Do you mind me asking, what do you love about the suppressor? I have been waffling back-and-forth on one of these for about 18 months. Just wondering if the cost is worth the effort?

Little to no recoil with rifles I've shot it on.....6.5 CM and PRC, 7-08, 260, class stuff. Great sound suppression so much that I don't need muffs, etc.

I/ve recently been shooting a 308 w/ 16" barrel suppressed.

Loads are super sonic but you don't get a boom, more like loud stick cracking.

It tames the recoil to where I do not lose the sight picture and even 50 yds. I can hear the impact of the bullet on flesh. I like that.

It did change the point of impact.

I fail to see why a 26" shotgun barrel is considered quite short, but even a 22" rifle barrel is seen as unwieldy?

Because shotguns are made to shoot while moving. A longer barrel adds inertia to the swing and helps with follow-through, which is probably the #1 reason why people miss with a shotgun (poor follow-through).

A 22" barrel with a 7" suppressor on the end of it is 29" of barrel and overhung weight, which, as pointed out above, adds to the movement of that barrel, which doesn't lead to accurate shooting with a rifle.

Had the kids’ 7mm08 knocked back to 16”. We’ve taken antelope, deer, and elk with it. It launches 162 grain Hornadys at 2500 fps

7-08 seems to be one that doesn’t suffer much from shorter barrels, if that’s your primary concern. For my part, the suppressor doesn’t offer enough to warrant the expense and trouble, nor the added length and weight. The ranges I shoot at require hearing protection whether or not you're the only shooter, and I’m not worried about one or two shots in the field at this point in life, plus I have plugs that provide some protection while letting me hear. OTOH, if I ever get access on one of the small farms near here, it would be a good idea to avoid annoying the gentry.

If it works for you, go for it.

Pappy, I shoot about 25 whitetail does a year on Texas MLD ground, and 40-50 hogs, and other animals as well. The less noise the better in my book.

Go for it John. I cut my .308 to 16” for a suppressor host and there has been zero down side.
POI changed but who cares.
7-08 is my favorite cartridge and my suppressors are the best investment I’ve ever made. I’ll end up threading every rifle I own.

I'd certainly cut it back to 20" and add the can, considering how much field shooting you do. You should still be able to get close to 2,800fps with some careful handloading.

As others say, it's tough to go back once you've used suppressors on centerfires, which I'm sure you're noticing too. I'm getting ready to ship a few off to SilencerCentral for threading. Looks like they have a pretty good setup for the work.
