Apparently the answer is cheap little diesel electric submarines.

In 2005 the Swedish boat "Gotland" with her lady skipper penetrated the submarine screen and "killed" the USS Ronald Reagan in exercises in the Pacific.

Also in 2001 the German U-24 diesel-electric boat "sank" the Enterprise during exercises in the Carribean Sea.

We knew this back in 1996 when Down Periscope came out...

I think the greatest threat to our Nation are the diseased, degenerate, and nation hating people who are 'in service' to our Country in all matters, but especially those who are in service in our military, and those who support them in their efforts.

Not quite. The subs maneuvered into a position where they had a firing solution. That does not mean the carrier would have been sunk or even hit since they have countermeasures built in. Also look at the dates, 2001 and 2005. You are completely clueless if you think the USN didn't take a look at those scenarios and adapt to them.

I find it funny that people who really know very little about naval warfare will look at a training exercise nearly 20 years old and think it applies today. The biggest threat to our carriers is the DEM Party since they tend to underfund the military and carriers are very expensive to maintain and operate.

Hypersonic missiles will be joining the fray soon.... not sure they have countermeasures for those yet. And drone swarms seems to be the rage these days for overwhelming our defensive capabilities and getting through our defense screens... I guess we'll find out if Putin makes good on his nuclear threats...

Hypersonic missiles so far have not proven to be "Wunderwaffe". They are extraordinarily expensive, costing upwards of $100 million a piece, they have technologic issues, and are horrendously expense to develop and deploy.

Then let's compare to slow subsonic cruise missiles that are reliable, cheap, and can overwhelm target defenses with numbers.

As far a fearing this new weapon system, those 50 year old ICBMs or sub missiles will obliterate cities if ever launched, so what's so special of extra fast ones?

I'll add I'm not worried about Putin nuking anything or anybody Mutually Assured Destruction dictates that payback is fire, radiation and death in multiples. Russia would erased from planet earth, divided up and assimilated by neighboring countries ....after the radioactivity waned. Not much on.

This.
At the risk of sounding condescending (I am so deal with it). ANYTHING that floats is vulnerable, including UNALERTED aircraft carriers, so in theory, yes a DE boat is the quietest and COULD deliver torpedoes (a lot of them , more on that later). But it isn't that simple. First, Des are slow and would have to travel surfaced if they have even a hope of approaching undetected to reach a firing solution submerged (Limited lines of underwater submerged approach, LLUSA). in other words, they would have to be ahead, way ahead of a carrier to achieve a firing solution. So I suppose in peacetime, one of these boats could get to say, an anchored carrier in port somewhere and attack it. REALITY CHECK: In the real world , if there were tensions internationally, a carrier strike group would get tons of indications and warnings of anything goin on at least within a two thousand mile arc. Then of course you have the incredibly capable anti submarine (ASW) assets circling the carrier and for a DE boat to get even close, not even a Klingon cloaking device would help it.

The USS America (CV 66) was used as a target to see how much a big carrier would take and it took three days of ordnance of all types including MK48 torpedoes to sink it. Keep in mind she was unmanned (no damage control parties on board) and stationary. Three days.

As to the "hype" (pun intended) of a hypersonic missile, that's all it is, media hype for you civilians to wring your hands and bitch. You know what their success rate is in Russia? HINT: ZERO. Second, just as above an alerted Strike Group isn't about to let any delivery vehicle to get within a thousand miles (or more) or a Strike Group. That missiles guidance, initially GPS (ain't going to happen because guess who owns the GPS network? yep, we do). but even if it gets launched it is moving so fast, it's terminal guidance would have to be so exactly precise, because at that speed the scan cone would have to capture the CVs radar signature WAY OUT, otherwise it would miss.

We also have an truly incredible arsenal of electronic countermeasures (ECM) to spoof the damned thing. Like Hatari correctly pointed out, they are really not ready for primetime. There's a reason why the chinks are porting most of their funding into building aircraft carriers and there's an even bigger reason as to why the "real" navies don't buy DE boats. They are fine as coastal defense and narrow navigation areas, but as a blue water offensive platform, they were OK in WWII. During the 80s and 90s, in the good old days of the Cold War (before Gorbachev ruined everything and ended it), massed, subsonic cruise missile attacks by Regimental strength (40 plus) Backfire bombers, supersonic and armed with AS-4 "Kitchen" missiles was what we trained to counter and with the Air Wing at the time with F-14 Tomcats and the rest, we could put up a screen out to 1200 miles plus.

Between them and the carrier were a whole host of assets, P-3s (800-1200 nm)for long range ASW, S-3 Vikings (that would be me) to cover the "middle zone" 150-500NMs. H-3s inclose out to 125 nm, plus a whole host of other ships to cover, we were a tough nut to crack. And if the Russians were stupid enough to try and get close with one of their Surface Action Groups (SAGs) between us, the A-6s, EA-6s, A-7s and E-2s, those gamers would enjoy an exciting, albeit short life. Now I'm depressed, cause I'm just a retired guy, wishing I was back there.

A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

J- we’ll just sneak into Davis-Monthan and commandeer a couple P-3 Orions and 2-3 Intruders and go hunting😂

I think the biggest threat comes from poorly trained officers. They have had a lot of 'accidents' lately. Well that and women on board the ship

one hundred million for one hypersonic missile? Have a credible source? Russia sure is using a few of them now
