Maybe he was 2nd or 3rd. Reports of loud booms during F86 testing shortly before.

People were breaking the sound barrier years before that, every time they shot a rifle. grin

FWIW, there is a difference in "breaking" the barrier and tickling it. Both make a boom. Fact is that now and then chopper rotor blades will make the lion roar. It's exciting, trust me.

XF 86 had 5,000 lbs of thrust.

Orville Wright met Chuck Yeager in 1945 and was still alive/alert when Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947.

I think he even sent Yeager a congratulatory telegram... if memory serves correct form my readings.
