Better hit them in the head only if you like to eat squirrel.

The first season I get my 93R17 Savage was the very first time I ever filled a season limit of 70. I also used that gun to have 5 laser ranged kills of 100+ yards. I sniped squirrels in our pecan grove. The 17HMR was the most fun gun to shoot bar none. Son#2 has it now.

I use a 17Hummer quite abit for squrriel pursuits. It works very well, but like stated above, especially with the 17grnVmax load, head/neck shots are essential. Im wondering about the 20grn TNT load for squrriels to minimize damage. Anybody have any results?

my savage wont shoot a Vmax so I use the 17grain TNT's. They cause plenty of damage as well. What about the 20grn FMJ, or the 20grn game point? Its supposed to mushroom instead of blow-up?

At the speed the 17HMR pushes thoes bullets anything other than a head shot is usually wasted game. The good thing is that most 17HMR guns will shoot well enough for those head shots out to 75 yards with a rest. I know from personal experience that a shot low on the head of a rabbit will decapitate it.

Work fine, but definetly more than one needs. Makes a mess of em if your not careful with your shots. Take eye/ear shots and enjoy.
