Mom had him cremated. He always shot a 7mm Rem Mag. I took one of the shells he had shot and neck sized it, leaving the spent primer in place, put some of his ashes in the case and seated a bullet. My wife made a little pouch and sewed it it the pocket of my hunting coat and i put that casing in the pouch. This way I still get to hunt with my father. That is what you can be certain will always be in my pocket You get out of life what you are willing to accept. If you ain't happy, do something about it!

Thinking about it, ziploc bags may the most heavily used non-hunting item that I always have with me when I'm hunting. I use them for so much.

Always have: TP Compass Flagging ribbon for blood trailing and marking locations Knives Gloves License & ink pen Extra ammo Bottle of water Binoculars Flashlights Facemask/headnet Candy bar Sometimes have: Thermacell Thermos LRF Thermal monocular Green light Handwarmers Now with even more aplomb

Jumbo trapper pocketknife that I always have with me if I’m dressed. Chapstick. Extra ammo, either 5 or 6 loose rounds for bolt and lever guns or an extra 20 round AR mag if I’m chasing pigs. That’s about it for around the house, carry a small pack in the mountains with a lunch and survival gear.

I do not keep much in my coat because it is the most transitory piece of clothing I use. Where and how I hunt means I might be taking coat off and on throughout the day. If I am glassing or sleeping in the snow for the afternoon I will probably have it on, otherwise it is rolled and attached to the side of pack or in pack. Also, because it’s moved around I prefer the zippers on the pockets.

Late in the season I get tired of the pack, and go very light on the paraphernalia, so more goes in my pockets. What goes where depends on the pocket layouts. My primary car key has an Olight attached in case I drop or misplace my LED headlamp. Two is one and one is none, as Clint says…… My backup piece is an LCP 2, and sometimes I carry a spare mag, sometimes not. Ten should be enough. What fresh Hell is this?

Top right has a spare pack of smokes, some jerky in a little baggie, and a flask filled with Southern Comfort to toast the animal on the occasion of my success. The flask has gone untouched a few times. Left waist pocket is where the drag rope, TP, and gun cleaning accessories live. I never know what the heck is in the right waist pocket....Might be a rock I picked up, some brass I found in the bush, an antler shed long before..... My knife, Maglight, cartridge carrier, cell phone and a Model 19 S&W are on my belt. I carry an awful lot of crap in my coat just to go friggin' hunting. LOL Don't let the name fool Ya!

If its 45° degrees when I walk in at 5 in the morning and it gets to 60° for a high that day I don't need a coat, a camo hoodie or a long sleeve button up short over a tee suffices on a lot of early season hunts. I can carry the same pack from early October when temps are warm/mild until the first of the year when Iay hunt freezing temps. I don't have to switch gear from different types of clothing as our weather changes from archery season until late muzzle loader. Just grab the same pack. Different temps/seasons/weather in different parts of the country may dictate how one packs. The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!

That means I'll be wearing my vest type safety harness which has 3 large pockets per side and plenty of room for my essentials, regardless of what I'm wearing underneath it. Gun season it's usually a matter of how many layers I need under my wool mackinaw, which has enough room in the pockets and rear game bag to carry enough supplies for a week.

One of the great things about a pack is that I can put layers in it. I could put most of the "stuff" I carry in pockets but at some point I need to add/shed layers. Usually heading in before light I'm only wearing a base layer on my upper body to avoid sweating heading up the mountain. I have a pack but generally don’t carry it.What I did is set up a vest that works for me. As a forester, a vest is natural already. I’ve worn a vest carrying my gear for miles through extremely rough and challenging terrain. For the last 20 years, I e used a Filson timber cruiser vest setup for what works for me. I added zippers on the rear pack for an extra clothing layer, bottle of water, lunch, or other larger item. Always have TP in ziplock bag, compass, light (small stream light hand held and head light), grunt tube, gloves, neck gaiter/facemask, and match lock. Cartridges go in belt carrier on waist along with knife. Binos are usually around my neck but can fit in side pocket also. This works well for me as it doesn’t effect adding or removing layers, is ready the next day no matter weather conditions. Incidentally, it can be 75 degrees here one day and 25 degrees the next. I can take off a sweater and stuff it in my rear game bag if I need to. Normally I don't remain stationary for long when rifle hunting so I don't dress the same as a stand hunter would.

You should read some Benoit books. They'll show you how far deer can be dragged by actual men. I dragged one about a quarter mile last season. Took me all of maybe 20 minutes. The other two I could get close with the 4 wheeler so little dragging was needed. In the past I have dragged them over a mile. I avoid shooting them in such places today.

They'll show you how far deer can be dragged by actual men. 20 years old or so, drug a small deer a mile or so across a cut bean field with a sling or belt as a drag tool. Told myself never again.....I have been fortunate so far. The last time that bear ate a lawyer he had the runs for 33 days!

This is where I would be if I hunted a ways from the house or truck. On my dad's place it would be a quarter mile drag at most to the truck or if lucky I can get a tractor close. One of the great things about a pack is that I can put layers in it. I could put most of the "stuff" I carry in pockets but at some point I need to add/shed layers. Usually heading in before light I'm only wearing a base layer on my upper body to avoid sweating heading up the mountain. Like 10ga mentioned, a pack makes it easy to have all the "stuff" together with no need to switch if different outerwear is worn. A pack works well for me. Whatever works for you is all that matters. I'm in this camp. Only thing in my pockets are phone, lip balm, a couple extra rounds (or mag) and a can of Skoal. WWP53D

I've also hoisted them over my shoulder and carried them through thigh deep water when crossing a creek. Much depends on what the terrain is like. They aren't terribly hard to drag down a valley over mostly level ground, particularly with snow on the ground. Of course they go down hill easily. If it's a bad drag I've boned the front quarters, cut the loins out, put the,meat in my game bag, tied the hind quarters together and carried them out over my shoulder.

Thinking about it, ziploc bags may the most heavily used non-hunting item that I always have with me when I'm hunting. I use them for so much. I also use ziploc bags for stuff including TP and Coleman biowipes. In the case of the biowipes, it keeps the moisture inside from getting out.

This is because I almost always pack my coat in a duffle bag and carry it out to the stand along with my insulated bibs. Once in the stand, I hoist up the bag, and don the outer layer before settling in.. This keeps me from sweating. I seldom travel out to the stand in anything more than a sweater. Once I'm settled in, some key bits of kit get stowed in my coat. I have a cell-phone, a walkie talkie, and my spare ammo. I want those readily at hand. I was losing too many chapsticks, so about a decade ago, I put a stick in my coat pocket and leave it there. Everything else like compass, knife, license, etc. All go into a possibles bag that I carry with me at all times. I used to carry a spare clip-on knife on me that I could use to cut myself out of my harness. However, I don't use climbing stands anymore. The rest sits happily in my pack.
