I came across an old Win 670 with a straight 4 power El Paso Weaver scope yesterday for a very good price.
The rifle has the three position safety but on the barrel it only lists it as a Win 670.
Did the 670 A have the A stamped on it to designate the difference??
Rifle is around 90% and i was thinking of surprising my younger brother and giving it to him for Christmas.
Seems to me i saw a 670A at a gunshow and i thought the A designation was stamped on it.
Any help is appreaciated.

I don't know about the A stamping, but I think a pushfeed M70 is a fine christmas gift for a younger brother. I have an early pushfeed .270 that belonged to my grandfather and it is an absolute tack driver.

Yes, there is a Winchester 670A. I have a Win 670A in 30-06.

I'm told that the difference between the M70 and 670/670A is that the 670/670A has a cheaper stock with a blind magazine.

Some people say that the 670/670A are not as accurate as the M70 and that is complete BULL. Last weekend I had mine out and the first 2 shots I fired grouped .455 inches at 100 yds. I pulled the third shot but the total 3 shot group size was 1.08 inches. These are handloads using 55.5 gr IMR 4350 and 165 gr Sierra GameKings.

I would not hesitate to get another 670/670A if the gun and barrel are in good condition.

I have bought three 670 over the years, a 30-06, a 270, and a 225. The 30 has a three-position safety while the other two have the difficult-to-move button safety. All are blind magazined birch stocked rifles. Both of the larger one have been real tack drivers as hunting rifles go. They and M788s have been some of the best money I've spent on rifles.

I picked up a 670 the other day with the plans of letting my son use it for his first gun, the gun is somewhat ruff and crude, the stock is a cheaper wood and the blueing is not of as good a quality. I adjusted the trigger to 40oz, which was cake BTW, it has a slight amount of creep still in it, but hey I did it for free. cleaned her all up, then went to the range with a box of winchester 150 soft point factory loads that came with the gun. and proceeded to fire off several groups easily under MOA, with the crap jap tasco that it came with, I am pretty happy with the gun

Well perhaps i should not let this one get away.
Does 285.00 sound like to much for this rifle with a Weaver scope on it??

Yes. It is stamped 670A.

It doesn't have the birch stock. The stock on my 670A is walnut. If I were to refinnish the stock I could make it look really nice. Another option is to just put a M70 stock and floor plate magazine on it if one doesn't like the original stock.

Well this rifle I am looking at definitely has a birch stock.
But it doesnt have the A stamp on it but is a three position safety so i must assume this little .243 is in fact a 670A.

If it doesn't have an "A" stamped on it than I'd say it's a 670.

Either way, if the rifle and barrel are in good shape....go for it. You could always put another stock on it if you don't like the birch stock.

So did some of the 670's actually have the three position safety??
This is getting kind of confusing. :-)

TxHntr,

This is a quote from my post in answer to Shaman in his query on the Win M-770:

Quote
I've found that when in doubt, it's best to go to the source. So I looked up my file of old Winchester Catalogs. My 1969 shows the Model 770 with walnut stock and 3-position safety.
The M-670 is shown with two position safety a.l.a. Mauser Mk-X. Also it states that it has a "Walnut finished" American hardwood stock.
By '71 the M-670 is down to two calibers: .243 and .30-06.

I don't have a '72 catalog. My '73 shows the M670 with a 3-position safety and the M-70-A replacing the M-770

Evidently about '72 or '73, they kind of morphed the M-770 and M-670, and dropped the two position safety.

My '75 catalog shows the M-670 equipped with a 4x Weaver scope. The Blue Book of Gun Values states that the M670 was discontinued after '73, but yet my '75 catalogs shows it still.

The Winchester M-670's can be found with both the side safety (ala Mauser) and the preferred M-70 3-position safety. (Depending on year of MFG.) My 1981 Winchester still shows the M-670 and M-70A. I can find no reference to a M-670-A. Apparently, when USRA, took over production of Winchester in 1981, that was the end of the economy grade M-70's.

I do hope this eases your confusion a bit. smile

I've had good accuracy results with my 670 in .243. It had a 3-position safety.

I had a 670A (stamped so) in 243. Pushfeed, blind magazine, birch stock, 3-pos safety.
