This thing is intended as a range extender for E-cars, if it lives
up to the hype it could be a game changer.

80 pounds and around 16"X16".
The hp of a modern 2.0 4-cylinder.

Hmmm?
My little Fusion has a 175hp 2.5, and it scoots along pretty good.
Thinking 4 of theses units could be put under the hood in the space/weight
of the current engine!

Wonder if it could be done in diesel?
A fuel efficient 10L under the hood of a semi, 4 or 6 of these in some
intermittent use configuration? 70mph flat land cruising, 3-400hp on tap
for hills.

Probably like many other engine revolutions.
Don't turn out to be workable in the real world.

If GOD hadn’t intended for us to have internal combustion engines, dinosaurs would of decomposed into lithium battery’s.

Lol!

I’m not an engineering type, but it strikes me that the conversion of reciprocal motion to rotary motion in this thing is not particularly efficient compared to a crank.

Can someone shine some light on that aspect?

Two years ago.

If it was that revolutionary, Musk would: own it; and be using it.

Bet you are right. Like the high rpm low torque of a rotary.

For its purpose it would be fine.
Kick on to assist the motors as the batteries lose juice, charging them at the same time. Maybe act like a diesel locomotive at that point?
Generators need steady power input for clean current. 2 impulses per 360, high rpm input through gear system would be perfect.
