Owen's friend, Nolan, and step brother, Caleb, went deer hunting in the rugged Desatoya mountains in N Central NV this weekend. Owen had a little bit of local knowledge and acted as guide. With resident deer tags so hard to draw now, only Nolan had a tag. The Desatoyas are a small but rugged range, and hunting them can be work. Well, about 1:00 p.m. today they roll in with this nice mulie. Nolan dumped him about 8:00 this morning. We hoisted him up with the tractor, and the guys got busy skinning. I'm waiting on a few other photos from in the field. I can't tell you how proud I am of all three, Owen, Nolan, and Caleb. I hunted the range south of Austin maybe 25 years ago, have to go out in the barn to see what year I killed my only Nevada buck. I recall jets flying down the range , amazing sound and speed when you're 5 miles from nowhere and not expecting a show. I assume they were out of Fallon.
Sad to learn a few years ago that local's have to draw. Is the deer population being regulated due to low numbers, or are there too many locals hunting making drawing tags hard? I recall we put in and drew as out of state hunters, but believe it was easy for locals to draw tags.
