This sold recently on an auction site (I didn't buy it), but thought it was interesting.

The gun is early 1940, 6 years after they last catalogued a combination kit.

The case... is VERY close to the late Winship cases, but differs in slight ways.

Is this a leftover late case that Savage sold? Is it a put together kit? Is it an aftermarket case?

Latches and lock are very close to Winship case hardware, the handle brackets are totally different.

PS: And my wife, who is a certified fabric specialist, says the interior is washed out/faded felt. Looked like foam the first time I looked at it.

Here's a late 1920's and a 1933 Winship case for comparison.

I don't recall ever seeing a case like the above where the forearm/barrel had the sights pointed downward.

Crossbar and brace under it are different shapes, screws. The top one doesn't have a 410 barrel channel - because they weren't selling 410 barrels in 1940, probably. The fitted cleaning rod is cool.

It's too late to letter, so.. refurbed case? Aftermarket case? Thoughts?

I imagine Winship made cases for other companies than Savage and probably would sell cases for different guns. After Savage quit offering them, since they already knew how to build them, maybe they continued to have them available for order? The cases are very similar. Could be someone in the past had a case that was messed up and had it rebuilt or had one built to replicate the old one. Seems odd that savage would sell one like 10 years after they were offered.

I don't think any of our long time collectors have ever seen a similar case used for another firearm brand. I know I haven't, and it does surprise me a bit.

A refurb is a definite possibility.. take a 1930's Winship case and replace the interior and "ta-da!".

But I can't help but think that a special order could be possible. Or maybe there are a few more out there in this configuration? I do know a couple cased sets sold per year after 1934 up to about 1938. But only a couple per year.

I don't want to sound too much like the greenhorn that I am, but what is that wooden-looking bottle-shaped gizmo on the right?

To the right of the buttplate? Cleaning rod handle. The cleaning rod is at the bottom of the case, screw the two pieces together and you're good to go.

That makes sense in such a nice travel case. It's a pretty nice kit, correct or not, I'd even look past the sling studs

Out of curiosity, how much did it go for Rory?

$950 plus 23% fees plus shipping plus FFL, I believe.

Gun looks in good shape, not sure what it would take to dye or replace the felt, but if the owner can do that he got a pretty good deal.

I'd have considered it, but other things have my eye.

Have we seen Savage cases without the config for holding the 410 barrel?

Assuming both of the above rifles have 24" barrels, note that the barrel in the known original Savage case nearly touches both sides of the case where the other does not. I don't think it is a leftover case but very well maybe a special made Winship case for this rifle.

Also, the exterior of the case does not appear to have a covering. In the photo of the closed case you can see a separation seam at the top front edge and what looks like nail heads on top.

Good eye, I hadn't noticed the nail heads. But I'm not sure there's a seam along the front edge, might be one or could just be light reflection off the material. I'm not quite sure how they would have nailed the top to the body and covered that top and still got the nails under the material. Top corners also doesn't look like there's a seam there?

Would have liked to see it in person.

if it is a "leftover case" from after 1934, it'd have to be a variety we haven't seen before. I lean more to a later custom made case by Winship at the moment.
