Good to hear about the RL26. For years I have loaded RL19 with a 180 Accubond at 2800fps. Very accurate. What is the effect of cold on RL26? THank you

2935 fps
59.5kpsi per QL and no pressure signs Yeah, I don’t know if I could bring myself to knowingly torch off one at that speed. Prolly flinch pretty good if I did. I worked up very slowly from 57 gr. Spent a lot of time in the 62-63 gr range before getting comfortable to go to 63.5gr. That extra 1/2 grain gave more consistent ES and shrunk the group size. Otherwise I would have stopped at 63gr around 2910 fps. 63.5gr packs a wallop in a 7# gun, and is just 20 fps off 300WM factory loads with that bullet. I didn’t mean I would be worrying about recoil. I’d be flinching because I’d be half expecting my gun to blow up every shot. If you’re good with it, by all means, proceed. I would just want to see some actual pressure-tested data before I pushed a bullet that fast in an ‘06 case instead of QL.
I probably hit more elk with a pickup than you have with a rifle. I have yet to see anyone claim Leupold has never had to fix an optic. I know I have sent a few back. 2 MK 6s, a VX-6, and 3 VX-111s.

2900+fps with a 180 grain bullet is impressive in a 30-06. I’ve used RL22 mostly for 180’s for years but if I run across some RL26 I’ll definitely give it a try.
ETA- I looked over Alliant’s web page data for this powder and it looks promising in several rounds I load for. 25-06, 7mm Rem mag, 300 Win and Weatherby. They don’t show anything for the ‘06 buy I’ll likely give it a go.

If you can find the stuff, it'll give you very good velocities---maybe the highest in some cases...but accuracy can be another thing all together. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it ain't.

I use lapua brass. Primer pockets are tight after 2nd loading and no signs of visual pressure signs.

Wow. QuickLOAD shows a pressure still under 60 kpsi for a 180 Partition pushed to 2935 fps with Re26---not that I take that as gospel by any means. Reassuring nonetheless. Just to clarify. I was using a Accubond. The bearing surface is likely a little less than in a 180 Partition, due to the boat tail. My 180 Partition load only went 2920 fps. I’d have to look up the charge, but I’m pretty sure it was <63 gr. Also these sort of velocities are only available with “hotter” lots of RL-26. Seems like the pre-2020 lots packed a little more “umpf”, where the 2 newer lots I tried required 1-1.5 gr more to achieve the same velocity. In those lots I ran out of case capacity.

I would just want to see some actual pressure-tested data before I pushed a bullet that fast in an ‘06 case instead of QL. I fully understood. I was very cautious with this load. Everything was done very meticulously. I shot almost 70 rounds to get there, all over a chrono. Consistent velocities, nothing out of the ordinary ever, etc. Some brass up to 4X. In fact the velocity gain with increased powder as you start getting compressed starts to slow down with RL26. I’ve seen that in 270 Win and 6.5CM as well. I also worked up a load with 165s and RL17 in this gun, and hit pressure at 58gr (by accident) - so I knew what to look for. QL was just another data point that seemed to agree with all the other physical signs of not getting too aggressive (bolt lift, primer pockets, case head expansion, etc). These are all dedicated to this gun only, and clearly marked “do not shoot over 60F”. All of my testing was done at 35-55F. The other reason I feel comfortable, is I don’t think running up to 63-65k is an issue with a modern 30-06. So even more safety factor, even if QL is a bit off.

Somehow I morphed it into a Partition as I read the thread. I don't have a thing against the Accubond. The times I've used it and put it where it's supposed to go it worked very well (6.5 140-grain). I just happen to be very well stocked with 180 Partitions for the '06, and they have worked perfectly every time. SPS has 180 ABs right now for cheap...but they're "C grade," whatever that means (broken and missing polymer tips, maybe?). I might try em if I needed them.

I tried Reloader 26 with 168gr bullets in one of my 30-06's and wasn't overly impressed.I saw a posting where the person was having great results with it using 180gr bullets.I decided what the heck I'd give it a try with the heavier bullets. This is where it shines.I had my 28" Pacnor barreled 30-06 when I did my test loads.Just for thrills I loaded some 200gr Accubonds too.I loaded up Winchester cases,WLRM primers,180 Accubonds, with 63.5grs of Reloader 26.I clocked that load at 2992fps.I haven't tweaked this load any, this is my test load target and it is not bad,so I left everything as is.I tried the Reloader26 @ 63.5grs with 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tips in two of 30-06's.Both rifles grouped this load about 3/4".My 23" barreled rifle ran it at 2890fps and my 24" barreled rifle was 2882fps.Looks like a good solid 180gr load. The 200gr Accubond test load was Winchester case,WLRM primer,61.0grs Reloader 26 out of my 28" Pacnor barreled 30-06.This load clocked 2815fps on my Magnetospeed. So yes,Reloader 26 is certainly a great powder in the 30-06 for the heavier bullet weights.

It amazes me how close Quickload data is when you plug in all the specific data. So,you really about run out of case room with this powder before your pressure gets too high.I feel quite comfortable shooting 63.5grs.Would you mind running it with a 200gr Accubond?I've only tried one load,61.0grs Depending on the powder I've compressed stuff to 110 and maybe a bit more. The 180's a long bullet so there's a lot of it to ram down into the powder. Here's what the 200gr AB looks like
Cartridge : .30-06 Spring. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 200, Nosler AccuBond 54618

Just keep in mind there's variance between cases chamber etc., so work up properly and I suspect you'll find a load you like.

RL 17 55-57 grains is good stuff This! 56 grains. Personally I think looking for 2900fps with a 180gr out of an 06 is asking a little much but I guess it’s worth a try. My top 3 choices for 30.06 is IMR-4350, RL-17 or RL-22 but I don’t think any of these will get you there. Good luck. Not Really, but RL 26 is a little too slow to get full velocity potential with a 180 out of an 06. you want to find 29-- fps with a 180, then you powder is H 4831SC, and YES you will be OVER load manual data maxes... but if you also look at the pressure the factory load data runs, you are well under the SAAMI max pressures for an 06 with that powder. Use a crimp, an 06 will run all day long with no issues, with 65 grains of H 4831SC pushing a 180 grain SP ( or RN ) bullet. you're velocity will exceed 2900, even out of a 22 inch barrel.... even moreso with a 24 or 26 inch barrel. and yeah, Nosler has pressure tested it in their ballistics lab in Bend....and verified it, not exceeding SAAMI pressure specs.

Have you done this, John? How was the accuracy?

RL-26 is a "wonder powder" in some applications, not in all. I don't think it is a wonder powder in this application. I could be wrong. RL26 is well out of the wheelhouse for a 30-06 with any bullet weight. RL26 is a great powder for a few cartridges. These days folks are sprinkling RL26 on their Wheaties and claiming their farts go 200fps faster. One of these days they’re gonna blow their azz off….
