Had to remind myself what it was, but yea, I'd try it. Probably won't run out & buy some, but other wise would if I got the chance.

I've never known ANYONE who would eat gefilte fish unless they were raised eating it. My wife was raised in a secular household and had never tried it prior to the first Passover she spent with my family. She tried a bit, declared it to be what cat food smells like with the added bonus of being covered in snot, and has never touched it again.
I love the stuff, as does everyone else in my family (blood relatives). It's best with real horseradish (grated) with matzoh or any other type of cracker.
But even I know that it's a very acquired taste and something that 99 out of 100 people on the street would wretch at.

Sounds like it's right there with lutefisk
As my mom would tell me - lutefisk is cod that if left out to dry on the docks and the dogs piss all over it.

Thinking lutefisk is a whole other level from gefilta, but having d neither, I don't know.
But I'm pretty damn sure I'd not try lutefisk or Icelandic fermented shark. Have watched a lot of foodies that would eat most anything draw the line with those 2.

I have had a number of Jewish people request fresh Lake Whitefish from me specifically to make gefelta fish. Never tried it myself but am not repulsed by it. My earliest memories of my Norwegian Grandmother holding my nose so I would open my mouth so she could shovel in some lutefisk. I don’t know how old I was but I was strapped into a high chair at the time. I tried but that woman went to her grave with no forgiveness from me.

Why would you even try to eat something that you cannot stand the smell of?

As my mom would tell me - lutefisk is cod that if left out to dry on the docks and the dogs piss all over it. I've had both. If I was forced to choose, it would be lutefisk. Prepared by a Norskie who knows what they're doing, it's not too bad.

I quite like gefilte fish. I didn't grow up with it, but I was about 17 when I first tried it. The mother of a Russian mate of mine went out of her way to get carp (otherwise more or less a rubbish fish here) to make it. A bit of horseradish - especially that variety made with a bit of beetroot to make it red - and a matzo to put it on, and it is something I happily go back for more of.
