What constitutes a saddle gun in Savage Arms talk? I have a 99-A 250-3000 built in 1972. The Savage Arms 1971 catalog that introduced the rifle said: "An historical new 99, a 99-A saddle gun, with a touch of history in features such as the straight western-style stock and schnabel fore-end".

Would any 99 with that description be considered a saddle gun?

In my humble thought process any rifle with a saddle ring would be a saddle gun.

The saddle ring carbine was actually catalogued as just "Carbine" in the early catalogs. The early "Saddle Gun" in catalogs was what we now call the 1899A SR (Short Rifle).

I'm pretty sure they got the name "saddle gun" for the 99A Version 2 from the early catalogs for the 1899A SR. Very similar guns except for the front sight.

So at least here on this forum:

The later 99A made from 1971-1982 is generally referred to here as the "Saddle Gun".

The 1899-F Carbine made from 1899-1919 we refer to as the "Saddle Ring Carbine" or SRC.

The 1899-A made from 1899-1922 and listed as the "Saddle Gun" we call the "Short Rifle" or SR.

There is also a 1899-A Standard Weight Rifle made from 1899-1926ish.

Simple. grin

It's not "just here on this forum". It's in Murray's, the original catalogs, and is going to be anywhere that people have read any modern 99 reference.

Murrays 3-13, Model 1899A Short Rifle, 22" BRL (1905 - listed as saddle gun)
Murrays 3-75, Model 99-A Saddle Gun, A REINTRODUCTION OF THE 1899/1920 22" BRL 1899-A SADDLE GUN

And both the 1899A and 1899A SR have standard weight barrels, the 1899A is 26" and the 1899A SR is 22".
