I had this same thought the other day while I was in the shower.

Or maybe it’s because the bolt lift is kinda high. I think they addressed that somewhat in later models, and Calhoun sells (or sold) replacements that had been modified.

I swapped my early, humpy bolt knob to Calhoon for one of his low sculptured, and it helps. I have a VX-3HD 2.5-8 on mine in Leupold medium rings and have about .125 clearance between the bell and the bolt handle. By my math I could switch to Warne mediums and reduce that gap to about .070.
Not sure I am going to, but I think the inability to mount scopes nice and low on these is their greatest fault. Some might not like the safety, but I think I can live with that. Overall, really like the rifle.

the price of these has skyrocketed. I had one rebarreled last year to 17 fireball. its probably my favorite gun of all time. its seen over 1100 rounds in the first year, has wacked about every type of varmint possible, killed 7 coyotes, (never planned on using it for that) it chokes down those little fireball cases like a fat girl giving a blow job on a first date. yeah they have some quirks, funky safety, bolt lift that might hit the scope if mounted too low. If there were a ready supply of 30 grain bullets and I didn't want to use an AR15 for calling. I would pick up a 7.62x39 gun and make it into a 17 ppc for my main squeeze calling rifle.

the action handles about like a big rimfire. the gun is light, trim and compact. I have been really interested to see how the CZ 600 shortest action model looks like. I have owned a carbine in 223, that gun would put 5 factory rounds into about 5/8" and a kevlar varmint in 223, that gun would shoot .5 moa.

Here's some pics of the early Brockman custom 6.5 Grendel I wrote about earlier.

Not the best pics but you get the idea. It now has the Calhoon lower bolt handle, Leupold VX3HD 2.5-8, and a CZ factory carbine walnut stock.
I reckon this rifle was pretty successful in getting the Grendel on the shooting world's radar back in 2002. When folks ask about it at the range, I tell them, "It's not a 6.5 Grendel, it's the 6.5 Grendel!"

Cheers,
Rex

My first Grendel was a 527 American. Lovely little rifle, but it was a bit heavy for the cartridge, and not a great shooter. The DMs combined with the CRF were a nuisance, but an Original Bob’s Sled (sent to me on approval by Bob himself, so possibly THE Original) fixed that. When I ran into a Fieldcraft online, the 527 went away. The Howa Mini that eventually replaced it has been one of the easiest to get shooting ever. While it lacks the classic style, it did earn upgrades to stock, magazine, and optics, and like all Howas, the bones are forged steel, and the bolt is a one-piece that takes down with a twist of the wrist. That said, if a 527 fell into my lap at a good price, I’d be very tempted. They are very nice rifles.

Good rifles. I sold mine for several reasons. The safety was backward, the bolt throw hit my thumb on the scope, and I had to use proprietary rings. It was reliable and the magazines were good.

I sure regret selling mine to my buddy. It does fine on deer with any inexpensive soft point.

Unfortunately, no. I was hoping for that, or even better, the Full Stock version. I tried to contact the CZ custom shop at one point about the possibility of doing up a FS in Grendel but never got a response.

6.5 would have been a nice combo.
