Found a pretty clean 1873 in 44-40, dates to 1898. Behind serial #, there is a R4 stamped. Lighter stamp than serial number. Any idea as to what this is ?

It should just be a single A or B.

Other than that, it was probably applied after it left the factory, making it a rack number or a similar number denoting what a person or business could have applied with their own method of identification…
