What are the down falls with the 7-300 - 7mm Practical? I see nothing but good.

The main thing I see is the rounds used to fireform the parent brass, but I want my new brass to be fireformed too even if it is not a wildcat, so that is kind of a wash, as long as you have a usable load for your purposes while fireforming.
It is a good performance level for 7mm.
If it is what you want, it is your money-ENJOY!

I’ve been using the 7 Mashburn Super since 2014. Set up correctly it’s a beast. It’s easy to make, 300 Win cases are everywhere and it has the powder capacity to launch heavier 7mm bullets to a useful speed.

But if you’re building a plain old 7 Rem set up correct is only going to lag 50-100 FPS at most. Just depends how deeply you wanna free fall into the rabbit hole.

the difference is so small why not just build a Regular 7mm Remington mag. so you can find ammo easier in a pinch and or brass ?

I think it’s all good. I went the Mashburn route, and if I had looked into it better, I’d have rather done the 7 Practical. Simpler case forming and a bit more capacity

Brass isn’t a problem because you use 300 WM brass. A friend put one together and shoots the 180’s at 3000

I think it’s just right.

I’d probably agree. The Mashburn and Practical are like peas in a pod, performance should be much the same. I also went Mashburn due to the nostalgia and a couple forum enablers! Making cases is a bit more involved but that’d be the only advantage the Practical would have. But if set up correctly, a 7mm Rem mag is a far more Practical choice! Mine only gives up 50fps to my Mashburn.

My 7 Remington Mag has a factory barrel. It’s accurate but shows lots of pressure and for a load that won’t fuqk my brass, I had to load it down to just under 2800 with the 180.

My Mashburn shoots the 195 EOL at 2965

The "practical" choice would be a regular ol 7mm rem mag..

My Rem mag is a custom job with Benchmark tube. No issues getting 175 NPTs to 2975 fps. It’s short throated too, most of my loads are 3.340” or shorter, some clear down to 3.275”

I have a new Mashburn reamer, new 7-Practical reamer, and few hundred rounds of NEW unfired Winchester White box brass for sale if you are interested.

Grabbing factory 180s at 2900 might be the most “practical” of all. Time will tell.

I’m thinking about a bigger 7mm myself so I’ll throw this out there too…

No interest in the Nosler offering, but a 7/300 PRC seems pretty practical. Good brass/dies available and it’s a simple neck down.

What’s involved with making Masburn and Practical brass?

Can't say what's involved for the Practical, but for the Mashburn a case needs formed in the dies and then fire formed. After that the necks have to be inside reamed to remove the donuts, which is a one time process. It's a great cartridge but unless you're already invested in the dies, etc I'd likely not go that route. I'd go with the old Remington 7mm mag in a 8 twist barrel or the 7 PRC. The Practical uses the same 300 Win mag case, just necked down as you would a 300PRC necked down to 7mm. Both of those may need inside neck reaming as well, I can't answer that.

I've decided to go with a 28" 8 twist 7/300wm. It's just to easy to get what I think I need.
