I want to cast for a couple of friends who shoot both S&W and Ruger revolvers in .41
This would be for deer hunting as well as plinking.

Which mold ?

Thanks gents.

I'd start here, with either a 2 cavity or a 6 cavity.

That bullet shoots well. It seems Lyman no longer offers the 410610. I decided I didn't need gas checked bullets some time back, so I bought the RCBS non-gas checked version for casting, the 41-210 SWC. I can't recall whether or not I've used it, but I have had good luck with all the RCBS molds I have tried.

The RCBS 210 swc is a good one.

I've used an old Saeco #411 that casts a 230 gr Keith style bullet to take somewhere around 40 head of game over the years but its very hard to find. Maybe even better is one of the Miha molds with the different pins so you can make 4 different bullets with the same mold. Look on the MP molds website. I've taken deer, elk, antelope, bear & African game with their 41 molds. Very easy to cast with once you get the hang of it, just don't tighten the screws up all the way until the mold is hot & it's best to heat cycle the mold a couple of times before casting.

I'll second the vote for RCBS 210 grain. It worked well for me.

If you go heavier, try buying commercial bullets in whatever weight you want to use and make sure the handguns under discussion have enough sight adjustment to land them at point of aim. One of my two Ruger Blackhawks back in the early 90 was essentially out of adjustment at 210 grains and the other probably wouldn't have zeroed beyond 220. Heavier would have only worked if I replaced the front sights or used optics.

Blammer,
I like that one a lot! Thanks. Unfortunately, nothing appears available.

I cast and shoot the discontinued Lyman 410429. It’s a Keith style bullet that comes out of my mold at 221 grains. It shoots great out of my Smith M57, and should work fine on deer. Problem is finding that mold. Anybody that has one is holding on to it.

NOE makes it still. I have two. You're right, the M57 likes that one. It used to be cataloged as the 412429.

For WFN frontal area with the Keith shape, I recommend this one. The 57 generally throws this one well too:

This! I have the 2 cavity one that drops bullets 197 grains, .411 diameter using WW. I shoot them in both my New Blackhawk and Henry without having to resize.

If you think you may be loading for a 41 lever action as a companion gun also, get one that cast a bullet with large enough diameter to size them to .413. That size shoots the best in Marlin .41 mag rifles. You can always size down as much as .002 without causing any problems from sizing. More if done in two steps.

I am looking for a .41 mold for a Freedom Arms and was really interested in the NOE mold but sold out. I am going to get the below with a gas check mold in brass.

Call Al at NOE ask him when he'll make another run.

May be sooner than you think. smile
