Family member’s gun, 600 Mohawk no-rib. Wants his two young daughters to cut teeth on it. He does the ammo scramble annually to no good avail. No big deal to me to load a pile of varmint/practice loads, and lesser qty of ttsx 80gr for medium game. So in a similar weight, what varmint bullet would you suggest?

I also like the 80gr Ballistic tip mathman mentioned but for accuracy and splat factor the 70gr Blitzking is tops with me

I loaded 80 gr Ballistic Tips at 2700 for my recoil-sensitive son for his deer hunt this year. Recoiled almost exactly like his 223 loaded with 62's at 3100.

This.

Edited to add

I wouldn't shy away from shooting deer with the 80 NBT either. I've used the 70 grain version a bit and never had an issue.

80 grain Ballistic Tip.

Target to deer. No need for a TTSX, I would place $$ on the Ballistic Tip killing faster.

80 grain Sierra works well on deer too.

Looks like it'll be next year now but hoping to run a 95 vld through something. Used to use 85 grain sierra hpbt on deer and antelope with excellent results. Seems like a lot of good 6mm options. Think I have a few boxes of 90 grain eld on the shelf too. So many options, so little time.

I'm anxious to hear how that 95 vld does at 6x45 speeds.

I used them in a 243 a while with no complaints near or far.

I like the sierra 85 hpbt too. I know 10gauge found them to be a little hard for him but I had no complaints with them. My son shot a lot of deer, coyotes and groundhogs with them from his 243.

It's a great do all bullet IMHO.

Like 30308 said, lots and lots of good 6mm options

Appreciate the suggestions, thank you all. Probably start with a BT, but a Blitzking is tempting.

And yes, don’t disagree that a well-placed BT will get a lot done. But. There’s no doubt he will put the girls on both deer species and elk some year soon. A BT would be fine, and a bad shot is a bad shot. But a ttsx is sensible in performance here, and is also a game projectile ballpark-similar in mass/recoil to a more economical varmint bullet so kind of set on the idea.

Should be fun!

The 95 BT is a hands down proven taker of deer and larger game, designed and tested to do just that - by Gail Root of Nosler.

On Varmints, I have enjoyed 70gr TNTs, a few 80s in RP PSP and WW SP, and the 85 Sierra BTHP which I have witnessed hammering deer.

The 85 Barnes is a hammer on deer/hogs.......but if I had to pick two bullets, I would use the 95 BT on game and likely the 87 vmax on varmints assuming my rifle shot them well.

Good luck.

My 6mm is a 240 wby.
The 90 and 95 ballistic tips have worked well on antelope.
I use 70 ballistic tips and 65 v max for coyotes.

If you are set on the 80ttsx for hunting then I'd just get any 80 grain varmint bullet I could find in quantity and load them up to about the same speed as the ttsx load. I can't see a coyote caring what kind it is.

I buy the 1000 round boxes of 70 grain TNTs. I've used all sorts of bullets in a 243 and 6 mm Remington...

Never really had any bad performers or inaccurate bullet styles... I thought in my younger years 243 was a pop gun... in older experienced age,
I use it quite a bit hunting...

I reach for 90 and 95 grain Ballistic Tips a lot, but plenty of other bullets work just as well...

My fast twist 6mm Rem, on a Rem 700 LA, one in 7 twist on a 24 inch barrel... that gets a Berger 115 grain bullet, with a lot of 46 grains of RL 19.
MV is 3250 fps... that combo can reach WAAAAY out there...

I have a stash of 1500 75 grain Hornady HPs left over, that over H 414 yields 3650 fps, and reaches way out there also, while yielding real small itty bitty groups...at 500 and 600 yds...

The Long Action is an upgrade with a fast twist barrel, over a 6mm Rem on a short action, and regular twist.

I started out both my kids with a 6mm in a 600 Mohawk. I cut the original stock down to a shorter LOP then ordered a replacement from Numrich for a full size replacement when they got older.

I too used 70gr TNTs lightly loaded for initial shooting to get them past any fear of recoil. I upped them a bit when they got used to shooting. When we went hunting, I used 85gr TSX (the TTSX was nor released yet) with full power loads. They never knew the difference. It was a lot of fun. I even had them help loading too. They really enjoyed running the press to put the bullets in the case after I loaded them with the powder.

I’ve shot many hundreds of pdogs with 70BT’s out of my 6 ackley. I took the rifle on a deer depredation hunt a few times and those 70’s literally bang flopped deer. Shots were anywhere from 100-600 yards. Didn’t matter. Bang and flop.

100 gr Interlocks are cheap and available at a lot of online retailers. Great medium game option.

Here’s my 243 win data...
30 gr IMR-4064 gives 2300 fps as a nice mild starting load for kids. 33 gr is around 2600 fps - which is a good deer load for up to 150 yds.
Switch up IMR-4350 when they are ready for full strength. 41gr at 2900 fps.
Those bullets have a fairly high BC.

My second choice is 95gr NBTs - similar powders and loads.

Adjust powder charge accordingly for 6mm Rem.

Don’t discount the 100 gr grand slams. Both of my 788 6mm’s love them. Niece took two cow elk with them. Lung shots < 200 yds.

I like what I can get, and 80g nosler ballistic tips are rare as chicken lips. Sierra anything is rare. So, you have Berger 68g that are available, and 87g V max that are available.

Also, the 95g SST is a fantastic bullet on deer size game, same for the 90g Speer spt, both are available. A friend is shooting the 90g Nosler BT on deer here because he can not find the 95g.

Hornady 100g btsp and 105g BTHP have been a staple around my family for years, lots of big bucks taken with these two bullets, no telling how many hogs....both are available.

Like what you can find, no use in chasing a pipe dream!
