Like title says, curious which you’d prefer. I’m not looking to shoot farther than 250yds. Easy answer is 30/06 but my 450 bushmaster interest me on this hunt for some reason. Lol

I don't see Aoudad as an ideal target for blunt, relatively slow bullets. Plenty of power, but how do you guarantee your shot is going to be 250 yards and in? Are you willing to pass on animals out of that range?

Whenever I debate for myself this kind of stuff, it boils down to whether I'm willing to go home empty-handed because of my self-imposed limitations based on firearm/sight choice.

That said, I think you should follow your interest.

I have never hunted Aoudad. However I have heard by more than one person who has hunted them that they can be tough and are found in some less than ideal places. Given the two choices I would go with the 30-06 and made sure I had the most accurate and hardest hitting loads for it. Not to mention the best glass I could afford on it.

I can't think of any reason to choose the 450 over a 30-06 for any game animal other than cartridge restrictions imposed by some states.

Neither, but they'll both work. 30/06 if that's all I had.

06 all day. The 450 is attractive because it can be hurled from an AR15, and that's a plus if you need it. 300 yds is max effective range.

The 30 06 and 375 Ruger are my go-to global rifle battery. For most hunts the 30 06 is the choice. But, where I hunt on my own property where there are no shots over 200 yards, and most closer to or under 100 yards, the 450 Bushmaster is what I take every time. The 450 BM starts falling on its face after 300 yards fast, perfect for my needs because I prefer the bullet to hit the dirt before it leaves my property. The kills are DRT every time. If I ever had to track, the blood trail would be obvious.

I hunt trespass leases where I pay a annual fee. I hunt a 1,700 acre tract out of a +/- 60,000 acre low fenced ranch. They are free ranging. Aoudad are targets of opportunity. I can shoot them 24/7/365, if i see them ( which is sporadic at best and there is no patterning)

I have shot them with 6.5 PRC, 26 Nosler, 7Mag, 308 win., 30-06, 338 RUM and 9.3 x 62. The only one I did not recover was one shot @ +/- 300 yds. with a 308 win and 150 gr. Accubonds and he was a stud.

If I were paying the going price for a west Texas aoudad hunt, I would not even consider taking a 450 Bushmaster unless I was hunting over a feeder at 150 yds or less.

But it's your money and your hunt.

Ya!

250 yards……..30-06! memtb
