On the law, the Dread Scott decision was exactly correct. Prior to the ratification of the 13th Amendment, it was legal in the US to hold black people as slaves, i.e., chattel property. As such, they had no standing in US courts. He simply ruled according to law. That's a justice's role. It's the role of elected legislators to alter laws.
