Cutting my .270 win to 20” for suppressing and was interested in insights on ammo? I would be using factory ammo and wasn’t sure with the slightly less velocity what some good options would be for elk. Thank you

I am not sure if it is available in the US, but Norma sells in Europe ammunition specifically thought for short suppressed barrels.

I don't know about their specifics but I would guess they are below max loads of fast burning powders?

20" is not that short, I'd look for a factory load that uses good 150s and is accurate in your rifle and not worry about the barrel length.

This is good advice. I’ve seen a bunch of elk killed with a handload that only pushes the 150 Partition 2650. It’s deadly.

Any thoughts on 140 AB vs 150 partitions? Thank you.

They'll both work, whichever shoots best in your rifle.

Thank you, I know the AB shoot well at least at the current 24” but the FC seems to shoot most rounds well.

I've chopped a lot of barrels to put cans on, and I wouldn't stock any ammo deep until you've cut the barrel and hung your can on. The barrel timing might change, ammo preferences might or might not change, etc. What is fastest in your 24" will probably also be fastest in your 20", but you won't know until you've done it.

No reason to choose any special ammo. Whatever the 20" barrel does the 24" barrel will do 50 yards farther away with the same ammo.

This has me thinking 18” might be fine vs going 20”. It is an Ultra 7 going on it.

If ya get too short , you might notice more snap when you shoot it, an likely more muzzle blast. I have two .243 Win. One is a fairly heavy compact . It's a TC Venture and real easy to shoot. My other is a Ruger American compact and only 6 lbs. It has noticably more recoil , not that it matters .

140s for me over the 150.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Any benefit to going 30-06? Apparently a lilja #2 contour fits the field craft pretty closely, so have the option of going that route as well.

I wouldn't cut the barrel on a .270......no need to.

It would be really long at 24” and a 7” suppressor.

All I know is the two 270’s I’ve been around with suppressors on them weren’t really that quiet. One of the guys even changed to a different suppressor but it didn’t help.

I have seen the ultra 7 on larger magnums and they were ear safe. I can’t imagine a .270 louder than a short 300 mag.

Going to roll with 130 partition and 129lrx I currently have. 150’s are hard to find.

I suspect that has to do with the particular suppressors, rather than a suppressor on a 270 per se. I've been around a suppressed rifle in a large 30 cal burning about 100 grains of powder and it was impressively quiet.

No suppressor can quiet the supersonic crack of the projectile traveling downrange.
