Looking for a compact fixed 4 or 6x, light weight and durable. Simple holdover reticle would be nice but required, any suggestions? Will be going on a light mountain .270 win set up. Thank you

I'd suggest searching out a Leupold 6x with the long range duplex (LRD). But they're out of production and the guys who have them are not often interested in giving them up. Mine is currently on an '06 and has been a great scope.

About the only fixed scope currently made that I could recommend is the Leupold FX 2.5 anything else has such a limited FOV that I couldn't use one, even the 2.5 is way less than say a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5. I have one on one of my coyote calling rifles and it is nice, covering everything out 300 yards with large eyebox and FOV on the low end to make target acquisition extremely fast even on moving game. It is lightweight and has a proven reliability over the years from calling coyotes to African DGRs.

I've been shooting scopes at game, far more than the average big game hunter and think fixed X scopes are just a hold over from the first marginally reliable variables. The only place I see a fixed power scope even in the running might be shooting over bait but then lightweight isn't on the top of the needed list.

I have a 36mm Leupold 6x LRD that I’d trade straight for a standard duplex 6x, 36mm matte Leupold. It’s a decent reticle but I still prefer a standard duplex.

The LRD has a design flaw for a medium and big game scope -Leupold used the wide duplex reticle's spacing for the LRD's horizontal axis instead of the Leupold duplex/ heavy duplex reticle's ideal 4.5 inch per hundred yard on either side of the vertical element. The duplex/ heavy duplex spacing provides a good reference for windage holds, which the wide duplex doesn't unless you're shooting a .22 LR to 300 yards.

For a .270 zeroed so the bullet is about 2" high at the peak of its trajectory, the standard duplex and heavy duplex will take you to 400 yards for elevation holds between the crosshair center and the post at 6 o'clock. The duplex and heavy duplex trump the LRD and definitely trump the wide duplex for medium and big game hunting.

I have a Nikon 4X on my 308. Very happy with it. They don't make them any longer but if you can find one they are worth having.

Learn why what you think want isn’t available. I don’t mean that smart. This is the good old days. Scopes are better than ever. So many nice options now.

They are a heavy baulky scope. They are 50% heavier than a 6x36 Leupold. Mine is sitting in the cupboard as the click adjustments were woeful. I like the 4x33 and 6x36 Leupolds. Brilliant scopes but alas no longer made. But there should be a few on the secondhand market. The 6x38 Weaver is also an OK scope for the price but fairly short so fits better on a short action.

Sold my S&B 6x42 on the fire a couple of years ago, big mistake. Just bought another one yesterday. Love the scope. Also own several variables.

6x42 docter #4 reticle, good as it gets.

Duplex or 4A reticle. My four have the 4A and I really like it.

Went with the plex. The 4a looks good as well.

Another vote for this scope. That is, if you can find one.
