Pretty cool article for 1960s gear heads...

Fury found, and turned out to be a Moonshine Runners Ride, bought new...

Fascinating piece of muscle car history...... Thanks for the story and pix. I've read about stuff like that back in the 60's but never saw too much else about it. Interesting how some of the early NASCAR guys came from that background.

The "Certified" speedometer is interesting unto itself...

Back before radar existed, or many departments could afford to buy a radar gun, the police cars were equipped with "Certified" speedometers.

The reason they were "certified" is that when a speeding car was spotted, the police would catch up to it and drive the same speed, and record that speed for the speeding violation.

It was also a very unreliable way to determine speed of the suspect vehicle. But police cars came with "certified" speedometers up into the 70's and 80's... But most I remember went up to 140 or 150 mph.

If the engine picture is a 426 Hemi - why are the spark plug wires not in the valve covers? Am I missing something?

It's a wedge, not a hemi.

Hard to imagine being able to haul enough shine in that to make it worthwhile.

Great catch!

That looks much more like a factory 440 engine.

Barry, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't speed, obtained from a 'certified' speedometer, admissible as evidence in courts.

It's a 426 wedge, they also made a 413 wedge. the 426 Hemi was based off the 426 wedge. the article states 426 wedge. A 440 is also a wedge.

Back then at $20/gal, you could easily haul 100 gallons. That's $2000 per run. What did the car cost.... 6K-7K? Pay for the car in 3 or 4 runs.

Yeah, at least it used to be.

Lawyers kinda tore it up though, because a lot depended on the officer depth perception, distance behind the speeding car, distance the car was paced...

Probably the most unreliable of speed calculations used when writing speeding tickets.

Another way they clocked speeders was VASCAR... Calculating speed by time between known distance.

Those aircraft calculated speeding tickets raked in lotsa money too. smile

Google 413 Wedge. Not HemI. You will see pictures with two four barrels on a cross ram intake as well as single four barrels. Edk

Yeah, 2 4bbl carbs on most, but I think you could get a center mounted single 4bbl too. At least on a Plymouth.

Both the 413 and 426 wedges could be had with the cross-ram duel 4's. they were developed for super stock drag racing.

There are expenses to be subtracted.

Popcorn Sutton was never rich. Not from shine anyway.

Average cost in 1963 was around 3k for car so could pay for it in 1 run almost..
