I have owned many 16's over the years. M-37 Winchester, late 50's M-12, early 50's corncob 870, and a [like new] Savage M-720 that still had the orig. hang tags on it.
The herd is now down to a late 40's Win. M-12, a 1952 Rem. 870ADL, 2 - Rem. M-31L's and my favorite a 1958 M-37 Ithaca with a 26" mod. choked barrel.

I have had a few over the years, Sweet Sixteen, Model 1912, etc.

I currently have a Win Model 37, Tristar G2 Viper and Savage Fox Model B.

I just started reloading, not so much to save money but to get what I want like steel No. 3s and a 1-1/4 oz turkey load.

Interesting to see a new(er) home for the `16 gauge fans.

I have been shooting my two 16 gauge doubles since 1990. And reloading for them. I shoot my 1915 graded 16 gauge Fox and my Harkom BLE 16. I live in SE Arizona. Some of you may remember me from the early days of the 16 gauge Society and 16gauge.com by the original 16 gauge load spreadsheet that I developed and contributed. Still at it.

Welcome C-man, I look forward to hearing of your experiences with the 16 gauge guns.

Hello friends. I just acquired an older, but gently used MEC 600Jr press in 16-g. I am looking to load a few boxes just for fun for the old Ithaca Model 37. With the scarcity of powder, I would like to use what I have on-hand for 12-g: Win WST and 700X. Does anyone have recommended recipes with either of these powders? Thanks and be well.

Wellnyou are handicapping yourself off the bat with the idea those 2 powders can do it. On page 197 of Lyman 2rd addn Shotshell handbook there is a 700x load for 1 oz in a hull and using a wad you can't buy anymore ( both) . Start a hunt for newer manuals

Bought a Citori Gran Lightning 16 at the end of January. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet unfortunately.

I have got good info from Hodgdon and Alliant. All free. I also use the Lyman Manual, and the BP 16 ga manual. Beware of random loading info on line, same as legal and medical advice.

Good Morning. I recently joined and this is my first post. I'm looking forward learning and sharing information. I own 3 vintage 16 ga. SxS's and I have been using RST shells for years. I love them, but sometimes they run out of stock, and they're getting a little pricey. I have plenty of hulls and a MEC reloader with the shorty kit. I loaded a few shells and sent them out for testing, and I was a little disappointed with the results. RST shells with 7/8 oz. usually have velocity in the 1100 range and pressure 6000. Using 15.2 gr. of GREEN DOT, SG16 wads and 7/8 oz. of lead, the test showed velocity of 1200 and pressure in the 10,000 - 11,000 range. I feel that is too hot for my little guns. I'm going to purchase a few more bushing and try a little less powder, but I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a low pressure, 2 1/2" 16 ga. I like to shoot my Parker and Fox guns regularly and there's no need to beat them up. Jeff

If you want lower pressure quit using green dot look for loads with Herco and Unique. The 2014 Alliant powder manual shows pressures in the range of your test with 1 1/8 oz of green dot. Suggest you get a Lyman shotshell reloading manual 5th edn and look for powders that list that level of performance without high pressure. You asked.

Thank you! I just left a reloading shop and I notice that do have Unique in stock. You've been a big help. Jeff

Jeff, there are hundreds of low pressure loads, most lab-tested, in the Low Pressure Group section of 16ga.com’s reloading section. It can take awhile to get registered—the manager is a busy volunteer—but stay after it. The spreadsheets they have assembled are an incredible resource for those of us with old, short-chambered guns. They ask for a $20-25 registration fee, and they encourage members to send in new loads for testing by Precision Reloading or Tom Armbrust and share that data. Best money I’ve spent in awhile.

Jeff, Unique is probably the best single powder for low pressure 16 ga loading, so I would get back there and get some if it’s still there. Prices are all over the place, and there is some gouging going on (the same day last week I bought 8 lbs of Unique for $267 from one big name reloading site , another had it listed for $368.

I also have some low pressure 2 1/2” loads for Longshot, 20/28, Universal, and 572 that I trust and can send you (and have lots for other powders and components that are harder to find). PM me your email, and I’ll photograph my notes for you. And, relative to @Magnum_Bob, I know I’ve seen Herco loads in the Low Pressure Group’s updated spreadsheets.

You can use low pressure 2 3/4” loads in 2 1/2” guns using a Hartin crimp or rolled crimp to create some more working room. Many experienced people trim to 2 9/16” for the Hartin crimp applications.

You can check, of course, the actual proof rating for your old guns on the barrel flats. Different makers in different countries use different symbols (and you can google “shotgun proof marks” for a set of sites that explain the marks at various proof houses. My old British gun is only proofed for 3 tons per square inch, meaning a nominal service pressure load of 6700 psi. Keeping a safety factor in mind, I keep loads under 8000 psi, and most well under. It’s really fun to shoot light loads, and they pattern exceptionally well.

Incidentally, there is a very cool Parker owners site: parkerguns.org. Some knowledgeable people there conversing in the discussion forums.

Finally, Jeff, there is a 7400 psi 2 1/2” load using your Green Dot in the spreadsheet right here (3/4 oz lead, 15.5 gr, Ched 209, PB SG-16 wad, 1177 fps). The source is noted as “fn16ga”. I’d want to know who did the pressure testing before I used it. Conventional wisdom is that Tom Armbrust and Precision Reloading’s testing and loads are far more dependable than BP’s, though some argue with that. If I couldn’t ascertain the lab that did the testing, I’d send in rounds to Tom or PR myself. It’s cheap insurance for guns you cherish.

Hi from Calgary!
I have an Ithaca 37 with solid rib, in very nice condition 1949 vintage.
Was used by a Saskatchewan sharp tail and hun hunter.Carried a lot but shot not so much.
Tough sell here in Canada, tried for 6 months for $475.- but not much appreciation for Ithacas.
Remington, Winchester and Mossberg, or Benelli pumps only.
