My local gun shop just put out for sale a Marlin Model 1895 Rifle in caliber 45/70.
It has a Cabelas 3x9 scope mounted correctly atop it.
The Rifle appears perfect - 100%!
It has the cross bolt (cross action?) type safety and is being offered on consignment for $1,050.00.
I have NO idea if this is a good deal or not as I am bigborephobic. But the Rifle is in such perfect shape I thought I would pass along this info.
I have no idea who is consigning this Rifle.
The stores hours are 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (MST) - the phone number is 406-683-9844.
No sales tax in Montana.
Hold into the wind

It depends on a lot. Also living in Montana, I absolutely want a stainless rifle. Also want the Deep Grove Ballard type rifling. I have a Marlin ( circa 1999 ) XLR stainless 24" bbl with the Ballard deep grove rifling. As a bullet caster I want good accuracy with cast bullets, which is all I shoot. My favorite is an RCBS 405gr ( actual 422gr ) GC style. I drive it at about 1350 fps with excellent accuracy. This bullet, this load, will easily take anything you will come across in Montana , or most any place. With the extreme cost of ammo these days , cast make a lot of sense to me.

I like the 45-70 Guide Gun, it is my favorite packing rifle. BUT the ballistics won't give you a Maximum Point Blank Range much past 150yds. If you load the cartridge hotter you can stretch that out to maybe 180-200 yards. So you gotta ask yourself whether or not you can hunt within those limitations.

If you want a bear zapper, the Guide Gun is hard to beat. Need to be aware that unless you're rich, the 45-70 is handload only. I'm still running the discontinued Remington 405gr JSP @1800fps, and have taken one elk rather nicely at 18 paces.

Now I bought my Stainless Guide Gun 21yrs ago for $600 and I'm shocked how much they're going for now.

$1050 is a fair price if it's as clean as you describe...

Especially for a local that walks in...no sales tax right ?

Shipping would be $60 or so

Scope..... Nuthin to write home about

FYI.....the 'RemLins' built by Remington the S/N will begin with 'MR'

Remington got off to a bad start first few years

This GB link is for a pre safety model....cross bolt safety started in 1983 ish which bring decent $$

In my heavy Marlin years....I always liked the 18" Guide Gun...or Outfitter

Had 'em in 444...45-70...450...even had a 'GS' 18" 45-70 stainless.....

Few yrs back had a very weak moment & sold it to my SIL.....):

Don't ask me about my military service or heroic acts...most of it is untrue.
