Kinda a minor counting coup thing on Friday.
I don't go up to the PX on FTCKY very often.
Back 40 to hunt 99% of the time.
Go on the garrison maybe 2 or 3 times a yr to check out what the gun counter at the PX has.
Surprisingly they had a really good selection of various LB shells in stock.
Got 2 boxes for 22.99 a pop tax free.

Last 2 of these ones they had.
Good selection on the rest of the LB shells.
Couple major planets lined up right for me I geuss.

My big question is ..

I have been shooting these shells for years.
Never have had a issue killing birds with them and watching em do the curly shuffle till they get the leg grab and back of the boot heel head stomp/ cling and jerk.

Would 6,s be classified as Pixie dust now on this forum???
Asking for a " friend" who is kinda judgemental.
Don't worry my friend is a very very accomplished turkey hunter and he won't hesitate to tell you that.
This is a picture of him in his work clothes in his turkey call shop.
He has lots of you tube vids.
But for some reason he seems to have the comments turned off on them...

If ya wanta buy one of his calls.
Cash only or make out the check to his wife.
(He doesn't wanna have conflicts with his SSI disability check)

The long beards are great shells.
I would not count them as pixie dust but then again I'm no ExPeRt

Rene,
I'm with you on the changing of the seasons. Turkey season opens two weeks late this year in TN. On the shell side of things, I can't do the TSS thing. I'm still using plain old #5s.

When does everyone's spring season open?

Here's our Virginia season:

April 8-23
Statewide
One-half hour before sunrise until 12 noon each day

April 24 through May 13
Statewide.
One half-hour before sunrise to sunset.

Looking forward to it. Getting to the woods hours before sunrise. Standing outside listening to the Whipoorwills and occassional owls. I love everything about spring season.

I shoot high-brass #4. In a 3" inch load, I once downed a gobbler at 80 yards. It was a real cock-up, but it proved how potent the load is. These are Federal copper-clad lead in a Flite-Control Wad. I've basically used the same thing since '96.

Pixie Dust has no great attraction for me.

Under normal operation, I go out set up for a 40-yard shot and end up taking them at 10-20 yards.

I've heard folks call me an Old Schooler for the ammo I choose. However, this year, I'm going to pull some days going Uber-Old-School with the Brown Bess: 11 Gauge, 41 inch barrel, 2 OZ of #6 lead over 80 grains of FFFG.

KY's season opens 4/15. I'll be out starting the first weekend in March scouting and recording sound for my podcasts.

Shotgun/Archery: April 15 - May 28, 2023 in TN. The youth hunt is the week before.
TN dropped their bag limit again this year. 2021 it was 4 gobblers, one per day. In 2022, it was 3 gobblers, 1 per day. This years, it 2 gobblers, 1 per day.

I've heard the TN population has been falling some.

Virginia's population seems to be doing well. 3 birds a year. That's it. If you limit, there is no mechanism to buy more tags.

Getting excited, hoping to hunt hard the beginning of April here then head up to my uncles in PA for their opener on the 29th. I’ve been hooked for a while but finally connected on my first bird last year and am hooked for life now.

Congrats on the bird Double_Aught and welcome to the fire!

I have 2 separate seasons in Wisconsin, only state I'll be turkey hunting in this year.... so far.... that I know of.

Sold all my turkey ammo, everything except for the 20ga 3" #9 TSS. Got enough to go buy another 5 round box of the TSS! Lol!

I just set up an 870 20ga to try out this year. TWRA has cut us down to 2 birds state wide and I have 3 different counties I like to hunt.
I’ll just have to see how it goes.

tndrbstr, I set up a Rem 870 youth, 21" barrel, a couple years ago now and this will be my third season with it. It really puts the smack on a turkey with the TSS shells. The amount of pellets on target for pattern density is huge, the velocity and penetration is incredible. Expensive, yes, but the performance is second to none for sub-gauges.

I started with the youth model my son would deer hunt with. It had a Hastings fully rifled barrel with a cantilever scope mount. It was a deer killing little machine.

I put the smoothbore vent rib back on it and went with an Indian creek .555 choke. The receiver isn’t drilled so I put a bolt on picatinny rail that fastens to the vent rib. It seems pretty rigid, so I’m hoping it will carry the Holosun Aems green dot site I picked up.
If it wasn’t for already having the youth 870 in hand, I think I could have bought a damn nice dedicated rig for what I’m gonna have in this thing. But the Holosun I can use on other guns.
3" tss #9s down the shoot.
We are limited to just two birds statewide now. So the season could end pretty quick…. or not! I’m looking forward to it tho.

Hopefully, attaching to the rib will be a non-issue for you, I don't know what the Holo weighs. The I.C. choke and TSS shot are well proven! In WI, we're allowed 1 bird per tag. I have 2 tags for 2 different zones and looking forward to it too! Best to you guys and good luck!

Dean I’m going to have to pattern the gun to find the optimum distance. I have a closer the better mentality, which may not be the best option for my set up.
