Page 3-84 of the Third Edition of Murray's has an "incomplete" chart of buttplate markings. It shows the Indian in an oval marking primarily from 1914 through 1928. During this time all the Model 99s with shotgun butts had a buttplate with what I will call a continuous curve. Sometime around 1930 the buttplate was changed to have a "reverse curve" at the toe and heel. This change is not referenced in David's, Rory's, or Murray's books. The chart also shows the SVG mark in a circle starting in 1926 and continuing until WWII. Thus it would appear that "continuous curve" buttplates are found with both markings for a few years.

I have a continuous curve G with the oval marking - #3078XX (1928); a continuous curve F with the SVG marking - #3236XX (1929); and a reverse curve G with the SVG marking - #3360XX (1931). So three different buttplate types in a relatively small serial number range. All of the other pre-WWII rifles I have with serial numbers higher than 3360XX have reverse curve buttplates with the SVG marking.

So, some questions:
Does anyone have any idea of the distribution of the two different markings during the 1926-1928 years? In other words, is one significantly more rare than the other?
Do we know how sharp a cut off there was between the continuous curve and reverse curve buttplates?

And, a somewhat related, but different topic - The first column of Murray's chart shows a round marking with "TRADE" above, and "MARK" below. This is the marking found on the hard rubber buttplates, but Murray's chart also shows it in 1923 and 1924 when no rifles were cataloged with hard rubber buttplates. Is this mark found on some steel buttplates?

Someone has been playing in the gun room. And paying attention. smile

I agree, narrow time band for 3 unique butt plates. It is Savage though. wink

Another thing is that if ever replacing a butt plate of that era trouble may ensue.

Someone with data will have to chime in.

I don't remember collecting data on your question. Looking at my rifles it looks as if the reverse curve started between 326xxx and 330xxx (1929-1930). As you found there were some continuous curve with the SVG stamp. That plate would be the low production one.

The first reverse curved plates were marked SVG and were one size till the R/RS was added which used a larger plate. Then after Savage moved to Chicopee the SVG stamping was dropped.

The recurve plate was larger than the continuous curve. Barrels went from small integral sight base to long integral on feather weight brl then to long on medium weight (fewest made) then raised ramp. Wood configuration had to change to match the plate and barrel change.

The trademark Indian was on the thick and thin hard rubber plates and some of the early metal SGB plates. I'm thinking the hard rubber plate changed to metal a year or two before WWI.

Since the wood and plate is numbered to the receiver we have not had to use the above details to determine if the part are correct to the rifle so have not looked into the questioned details.

Good questions.

Yes TRADE and Mark are also on some steel butt plates.

Thanks Rick. The data on your rifles certainly helps narrow down when the change occurred.

Well to confuse things a bit more, the first reverse buttplate i have is on a 99E s/n 299090 it has no markings on it whatsoever. The first rifle i have with a SVG marked buttplate is a 99F s/n 318,042. I have a few between these s/n,s that have the regular shotgun style buttplates with the screaming indian logo on the bottoms.

That all falls in line. That smooth plate is interesting. I don't remember hearing of another.

Correct but I think they were only in the continuous curve style.

Depending on how much inventory was in stock, your continuous curved SVG 3301xx and my 3307xx reverse curve should put us in the ballpark for the changeover.

David, you might want to check the serial on the plate of that 99K.

I'll check it. The heater went out in the vault and I wanted out of there in a hurry yesterday. Will brave the cold this morning and pull it.

3094xx has a 3 digit number on the BP. 509. I never saw that before. The post 1950 plates have assembly #'s with numbers and letters. Maybe an early Chicopee BP but why is it only 3 digits? The buttstock has a partially unreadable # that doesn't match the serial #. It is penciled on not stamped into the wood. The BS has the proper checkering and the patina matches the rest of the rifle.
The forearm serial number matches and the barrel has the last 3 digits of the serial number.
The rifle is pictured on pages 71 and 73 of the collector's guide.

I've seen 2 and 3 digit numbers on buttstocks/buttplates that didn't match the serial number. They were later factory repairs.

Had an 1899B with SVG stamped shotgun buttplate, both buttstock and buttplate had 2 digit codes on them.
