All you have to do is read my "signature comment" (in green... below) to know how I feel about the Model 99 "EG"......  Don't pay any attention of Joe ( Mad Dog) and his "tomato stake" remark... he's a Canuck and has STINKY FEET to boot !!! Strength & Honor... Ron T.

Actually, Tomatoe-Joe is probably one of the guys who knows best when these post-transition changes took place. I agree that some of the earlier 250-3000s deluxe models and transition "G"s in smaller calibers seem to have had a slimmer profile than the later guns made in the 1930s.

Well, the only one I have I got recently, but I think the lines are classic. And I love schnable fore-ends. Got a Winchester Model 54, first year production, got that narrow schnable stock on it. Beautiful rifle.
Not many problems you can't fix
With a 1911 and a 30-06

I love the looks of the EG as well. I have owned several, but my vote for the best hunting tool is the post WWII 99F. They are much lighter than the EG and seem to balance about as well to me. The 99A Saddle Guns were light and handy, but I cant stand that tang safety and aluminum rotor. If they would have made an F with EG fore end, then we would be talking about the perfect Savage 99.

Thanks Burt. I hope Tomatoe-Joe reads this posting and lends his endless wisdom to us to help shed some light on the sutuation!! My 1923 is a transition rifle for it is still stamped 1899. Also, on page 3-42 of Murrays, you can see the size difference in the illustrations!!

I really like the EG and the way it handles. If I wasn't so hung up on big bore Marlins, I'd collect EGs.

I think I have an EG, early .308, schnabel fore end, pistol grip, counter. Excellent condition.
Probably going up for sale.

That would be an EG worth owning...one in a Win caliber.

They ONLY "smell" a little bit... as long as you stay UP-WIND of him and don't get too close !~!~! In truth, Joe is a respected, long-standing Member of the Savage Collector's Forum who has a vast knowledge of all things "Model 99"... and he should be respected at all times, even when he makes goofy "tomato-stake" remarks about the highly-valued and most beautiful "EG" models.  We gotta cut ol' Joe a little "slack"... he IS gettin' OLDER, don't cha know. Some of us who collect savages try to get the different calibers in the different models, i prefer the pre-mil models ,and i hunt with a Eg 358! I love a few things, but i collect firearms. Don

I like most Savage 99's and particuliarly like the pistol grip look and the schnoble forend. I believe both the "EG" and "G" have checkered forends which I like.
I just happened into the "G" for sale at a gunshow last Februrary and would have purchased it if it would have been an "EG".
From what I understand, the "G" is a bit more collectable because it is a takedown.

Well, maybe a dyed in blue collector can tell me a TD "G" is where it's at but for me, give me a solid frame or an "EG" for hunting and shooting in it's stead any time! ( I've sold all my take down Savages, end of story! )

Well, I'm kinda partial to 250s and happen to be looking for one for the Young Grouser (who insists he be referred to as Imp99) PM me the details with pics if your willing. Hey! does it shoot worth a d  mn? But deferring to your expertise, when did the profiles on the "G" seem to change?

Sold the G, no room for it. The 250-3000 stays, it's wearing a Boone and shoots alright, not a tack driver but respectable 2" groups, I wouldn't hunt it anyways.
