Got one just because. 40s model gun in nice shape. Thought I was going to start picking up various 5teens but never happened. Does go well with my 513T though. Shot it a bit at paper and surprised me with just open sights.

I used to collect them. I had a very nice one with peep sight and it's sister a 512 was just like it. I hd and offer $600 for both. I turned it down. That was about 10 years ago. Then I thought hey, I might as well sell them for a different rifle purchase. I put it up for auction. I got about $100 each. I'm still upset about that!

I still have a 512, 513, & 511. But those two were the finest I've ever seen.

I prefer classic.

Solid, vintage .22 with heart and soul! Very accurate, too!

I like old vintage .22s... have gravitated to Remington bolts over the years for utilitarianism, cost, and performance. Also have had Browning T bolts, SA22s, Savage- Anshutz, a HK 270, a couple of Mossbergs, a Winchester 9422, and now a new Tikka.

They are hard to compare to the quality new stuff but have their own "intangibles."

I currently have grooved 511, a 512X, a 581, and a couple of 513 Sporters in my humble little Remington stable. As mentioned, all are very accurate and hold their own wrt my other .22s. The 513s are my personal favorite because of their "heft", sporter refinements, and crisper trigger... all in a 1940-1950s American made firearm. The 511 is less refined but cheaper as well and still performs! The 581 is kind of a mix of both in a more modern and shiny version.

In short, can't go wrong with a 511 if the price is reasonable and it has been taken care of. All .22s are fun!!!

Would $300 be too much to pay? It's by no means beat to [bleep] and not near mint. For its age and used well taken care of. Bore looks good for sure.

Got mine for Christmas 1962. Still have it. Very accurate and I've killed several truckloads of critters with it.

It doesn't seem that many sell on Gunbroker(looking at completed auctions) when they get past the $300 mark, a lot of cost adders involved there.. But a decent one for 300 OTD wouldn't be too much IMO. Like others have said, great guns, a lot of fun. I think the 40's to early 50's 5 series 22's are overlooked gems.

552? Or 522 552 Pictured and the 522 was the plastic Viper 22. If you got the 552 for that you got a deal.

A 511-X was my first rifle, bought it in 1963 with money I earned “chopping cotton”. The X model was grooved for tip off scope mounts and had the Nylon 66 type sights. Still have it and shoot it from time to time.

I do not have a 511 but I do have a 510X and it’s one of the best shooting 22’s I have.
I wouldn’t have a problem with any of the rifles in that series.

I bought a used 511 about 40 years ago. For many years, it was my go-to squirrel rifle. I still have that fine old Remington.

511 was my first bolt 22. Picked up at a yard sale with out a bolt. Fixed that in short order.
I just gave my brother inlaw a 511 as his first 22 rifle. He seems to love it. I have 2 512x, a 513s and a 513t that a buddy gave me. Im going to take one or both of the 512x to the gun show this weekend will price them around the $300 mark maybe slightly more. Sad part os I can part them out for more than I cam sell them for. Cabela’s has beat ip 511 that someone carved on the stock & not very well. They are asking $169

Not a 511 but its single shot brother, a 510P Targetmaster. This one dates to November 1961. Very nice handling and lightweight even with a 25" barrel. That long barrel really helps accuracy with the factory peep sight. Speaking of, it looks funny sticking up like that but it's very functional and adjustable for windage and elevation. The larger knurled nut holding it on is actually a second aperture so you get two, one with a fine hole for target work and another with a larger hole for field use.

Those old Remingtons were considered budget rifles in the day but they hold their own pretty well with a lot of modern rifles.

Nice model 10, I have had one p model. Another thing that seems consistent is these rifles tend to be accurate. Budget models or not they are well made and still reasonable priced to put a collection together if that floats your boat.
There are even some that were made with the nylon stock. If you happen to like semi automatic they made the 550-1 wich is built on the same action.

They just dont make them like that anymore! 510, 511, 512, the entire 5 series are all worth owning. I have had them all

I have a 510 Targetmaster made in December of 1941. Love that rifle, I have killed a ton of g-hogs with that gun. I will not sell it. It is my favorite 22 rifle.
