I'm considering rechambering my Tikka 6.5 CM to the 6.5x284. I was looking on line today and it seems load data is a little sparse. I've got lots of H4831, RL16 and RL 23. I didn't find data for any of these. Is there a powder that is available now that would be better suited? I would be shooting the 140gr class bullets. Barrel is already cut and threaded @20".

I'm looking at Nosler 6 reloading guide and there is plenty of info for the 6.5-284 when I was shooting one I used H4831 and RL22 IMO with a 20" tube you are better off staying with a 6.5 CM

IMO with a 20" tube you are better off staying with a 6.5 CM After looking at several examples, it seems that 3000 fps is the average for 26" barrels. Assuming 25fps/inch of barrel loss that would put the velocity at 20" to about 2850. I'm currently getting 2767 with a 135 Berger in my CM. All that to say I agree with you, just not worth it.

I just bought a Schultz and Larson in this chambering with a 26" barrel. I used John B.'s data from Gun Gack 1 which was 53gn H4831 with a 140gn bullet for 2930/2940 fps (26"). My rifle gave 2885 fps with the 140gn Hornady Interlock (26"). I'd be very surprised if you got 2850 fps in a 20 inch barrel. I'm not sure the conversion would be worthwhile in that barrel length. But good luck.

In my 6.5-284 Norma, Savage 116 SS left hand with 22” barrel, i develop the following load. The barrel has an 8 twist. The load is 49.8 grs of RL 23, federal 210 primers, nosler brass, 127 Barnes LRX, 3.000” COL, 1 5/16” for 3 shot groups at 200 yards, SD 6.5, average velocity 2796 FPS. Mixed loads of 47, 48, 49, and 50 grains of RL 23 with 127 gr LRX averaged 2.5” at 200 yards. All shots were taken off sand bags.
Safe load in my rifle, but as always start low and work up.
My rifle is a long action with a chamber and that allows me to seat the bullets long.
Hope this is pertinent to your question.

Good information fellas thanks. I bought a Magnetospeed chorny to compare to my Pro Chrony. I wanted to double check my velocity before making any decisions.

No need to look further than the H4831 you already have.
