Interesting looking brass…..I’d be a bit hesitant to attempt to use them. From the seeming pressure signs…..the previous shooter must have run them through a 7mm 08! 😁 memtb

That is odd... reminds me of the old 8mm Lebel with the groove to catch bullet tips.

I've seen that, but only in ancient .30-06 ammo intended for aerial machine gun use. The heavy crimp evidenced by the deep annular ring was to forestall primers from backing out if headspace on the gun was loose. Clearing a jam in your gun when at 8000 feet with numb hands while a German Fokker was trying to shoot you down wasn't fun, or so I'm told, even worse if the gun was mounted remotely from the cockpit in later planes. Come to think of it I've seen .303 British ammo with the same unique crimp, but never saw .308 ammo like this.

It was only like 19 pieces so it went in the recycle bucket to be cashed in for the youth shooting club's needs. I just wondered if it was more common than I though. Thanks gents.

well you've already came up with a solution...but if something like that pops up in the future...
I'd try to load one of two to answer your question...
If NOT Berdan primed...25 to 30 grains of 4198 pressure will be in the 30,000ths to high 30s.. don't think that will break anything...

The groove was turned into the base of the case to eliminate the head-stamp, or make it impossible to read. Note you can still see a bit of the letters remaining. I've seen it done before.

The groove was turned into the base of the case to eliminate the head-stamp, or make it impossible to read. Note you can still see a bit of the letters remaining. I've seen it done before. Yep, Some countries require the companies that resell their surplussed ammunition to deface the head stamp on ammunition before it is resold. Most I have seen is European 8mm and 7.62x51.

If that’s as deep as it looks, I’d be concerned about ripping the rim off with the extractor if a shell happened to be snug in the chamber.
