Jeff,

I read a lot of his stuff over the years, especially on the big bores, but I don't have any of his barrels.

Welcome to the forum Jeff,

Here is a link to a Buhmiller article here. Buhmiller

I have a rifle by the late Floyd Butler of Poultney, VT. Floyd was an old time smith who used Buhmiller barrels and indeed said that he had put one on my cherished high wall that he chambered in .22 R2 Lovell. It has a beautiful stock in the style of the era by Butler. Someone rechambered it to .219 Improved RCBS Zipper before I got it. The twist is 1-16" and it shoots the 50 gr Sierra spitzer very well.

Here it is. The barrel is not marked Buhmiller but just has the Butler info on it. Its very accurate.

Jeff: Which Buhmiller is your father? John was my Grandmother's first Cousin, which makes us ...related somehow... I have kept up with Todd Buhmiller; is he, by chance, your dad? Reach me at 217-304-8142 and we can chat.

15 years since OP. It would be nice if somebody connected here.
Loved reading about "Oom Johnnie" (Uncle Johnnie, as the Afrikaaners called John Riley Buhmiller)
pioneering wildcats and safari shooting with them.
He also carried a .458 Win. Mag. after 1956, as backup for whatever big bore he was field-testing.
He had so many wildcats to try over a couple of decades, he probably ended up using the .458 Win. Mag. at least as often as any of his many wildcats.
Oom Johnnie did the .460 Weatherby before Roy Weatherby.
He did the .510/.460 Wby long before Art Alphin's .500 A-Square, etc.

...As an aside: Several years prior to John Buhmillers death I met him at his home in Kalispell, MT. At the time, I had no idea who, or what his background was. Later I learned he was a noted rifle barrel maker and had been retired for many years. My good friend introduced us, and during the course of our stay, JB spoke a bit about some of his work. He mentioned how he loved big bore rifle cartridges. He also mentioned the fact that "blunt nose" bullets penetrated much better than the conventional round nosed bullets. The year was 1973. Just as we were leaving, I noticed what appeared to be steel rods in his wife's garden, and I asked what they were. He said they were some of his old barrels that were culls, and his wife used them for tomato stakes.
