Are there any major drawbacks, using 1-7 twist in ar barrels. What have you experienced. I want to shoot 55gr and up in this barrel!

There are no drawbacks. Been using a 1-7 twist in AR's since about 2002'ish.

The only slight to the 1-7 might be if you're wanting to shoot really light skinned bullets like the SX's or similar, otherwise, blast away, care free! Even then, I don't think a 16-18" 223/5.56 is going to make enough steam to even hurt those bullets.

I doubt you'll have anything but a positive result.

Very fragile. Might (or might not) come apart in flight.

OTOH, I have a 1-7 AR that shoots 40 gr BT's better than any other bullet I've tried.

Those were the exact ones I was thinking of. I’ve never used em in a 1-7 223 but I’ve used the 40 BTs and as you said, they shoot well and just poof crows.
