We're paring down some of my dad's collection and I was hoping to find some info, year of manufacture, & perhaps value of a couple Savage & Stevens guns

1) Model 99 (?) .300 Savage #710xxx - I'm not sure the year of that, it does say Chicopee Falls, Mass
2) Model 29-A: pump .22, no serial, Utica. NY
3) a single shot J. Stevens shotgun. It's badly worn but looks to say "single gun"
4) A Red Chieftain 16 Ga single shot with mis-matched barrel/receiver serials (890xxx & 834xxx) which I understand was also built by J. Stevens.

5) Model 1895 75th Anniversary.

Really most of what I've found was on the anniversary model. Any information on the others would be greatly appreciated.

A picture of the 99 would help greatly.

#1 is going to be a 99EG or a 99R, only two models made at that serial number range. A 99EG has a thin forearm with schnabel tip, the 99R has a fat and wide forearm with rounded end. Should date to 1953.

Value has so much to do with condition, a pic is really needed. But just as a starting point, last year I bought an EG in .250, here for $400. It was in very good hunter grade condition, no extra holes, like drilled and tapped for scope or sling swivels. A couple years before that I bought an R in .300 from a member here for $450. It was in very nice condition, but had sling swivels added. The "R's" were factory drilled for a scope, Joe.

The .300 Savage is on the bottom. Just ignore the top one, it's a foreigner wink
So the forearm tip makes it an EG, correct?

Your EG looks decent, though if made in 53 its not factory drilled for the scope. You should see the factory roll stamp to the left of the front base if it is factory drilled. If not, then the roll stamp will be under the base. The sling swivels are also "add ons."

Can you post a pic of your Model 29A pump? Try to capture the barrel roll markings and the receiver roll mark.

More pictures will have to wait, as I only had access to the guns over Easter weekend. I was documenting models/ serial # more than photographing at the time, but I will get pictures and appreciate the information!

Holy necro batman! but since these are the same guns I hope this is ok.

Anyway, here are some pics of the 29-A, # 2352. Judging from some other posts, is this is an early one with the A added tp the barrel after? Can anyone offer additional info on the 29-A?

Also the 99EG - the roll stamp is inline with the scope, so confirming the added scope.

Has the whole forum recently passed through a time warp?

Or is it just me?

I guess, 4½ years later, but you are definitely a man of your word! Welcome back!

The 29-A's started with serial number 1000 and were introduced in 1938 based on the best information I can find. The early ones all had octagon barrels and the very early ones of those had the Model 29 barrel stamp with the '-A' added. Later round barreled versions are more common at about 2 to 1. A few very early ones also had the '-A' added on the receiver stamp but yours has the correct stamp. Checkered wood was standard until a few in 1950, the last year of production.

The 29-A was a much improved action over the 29 and should have been a completely different model instead of just adding the -A. It's a stronger action than the 29 but I still suggest only shooting standard velocity in them and definitely no hyper performance loads, I have seen a few with distorted locking surfaces in the receivers. The scope and it's mounting holes have been added.

Slow and steady wins, right?

Thanks for the info. Especially about the standard velocity rounds. I'll keep that in mind. I think that's what I have but the 22 pile is a mis-mash of stuff.

Is there any information on the finish of the stock? This one has some finish damage especially near the butt. I'm guessing probably not shellac given you'd expect outdoor moisture exposure (unlike furniture of that time frame). Some sort of lacquer or varnish?

Walmart has CCI Standard Velocity at a not too bad price. Since I have 3 NRA Match Rifles and a Stevens 414 Armory, all I shoot now is the CCI Standard.
