79S peaked my curiosity with tales of a classic stainless with a SN under 39k. It’s the earliest stainless I’ve seen. Of note, these first classic stainless guns were marked “classic sporter” which seems to have changed to the normal “classic stainless” sometime before G44xxx. Here’s mine 270 Winchester I currently own. I still have G49533. Marked "Classic Stainless". In .243.

I need to buy more of these. The one I have is 69xxx its's marked "CLASSIC STAINLESS". I'll keep a better eye out for these, seeing how it looks like they sold like hotcakes in the classifieds here.

Hal Yep.. I had a LH M70 Classic Sporter stainless in .300WM. Bought it new in '92 or '93.. Only shot it about 50 times.. It was a rifle that I just couldn't get used to, even though I'm a LH shooter.. That, and the recoil on that specimen was totally uncomfortable.. Finally sold it on Gunbroker about fifteen years ago...
