Buckskin moccasins are "a decent way of going barefoot".... I find them pretty much useless. Others adore them. Frontiersmen in the 18th century would have to repair them almost daily, and replace them within a week or less. When you have a constant supply of deer hides, you can do that, I guess.
I have made myself a pair of "shoepacks" (essentially the same as the French Canadian "souliers de boeuf"). Made from real cowhide leather and double soled, as they sometimes were. I have an improved pattern worked out, and eventually, I may get around to making another pair.

as a kid i had a pair of hand me down from my cousin .buckskin cowboy boots with fring on the top ,loved those things ,hated it when i out grew them too

Growing up my grandmother gave me several Maine made buckskin and moosehide mocassins as birthday and Christmas gifts.. Wore "dirty bucks" in HS.
